War diary
CONTINUED FROM > PAGE 12
Of the 528 entries his uncle
made in his diary, Dalton
included 329 entries in the
book, which were accompanies
by200 detailed black and white
ink drawings.
Dalton said while many of
the entries and illustrations
touch on his uncle's religious
life, he hopes people don't see it
as a religious book
"I am quick to say to people
that it is not just a military book
and itis certainly not a religious
book, itis a diary of a war;" said
Dalton. "If anything it is a war
book, but it has got lots of chap-
lain's thoughts in it of course,
because that is what he was."
As Dalton worked on his
book, his original plans
changed. Over the past few
years much was being made
about the post traumatic stress
disorder Canadian soldiers
were experiencing. Dalton
decided to add his own inter-
pretations of the PTSD the sol-
diers may have been experienc-
ing during their "confessions
and conversations" with his
uncle.
"These guys my uncle was
with probably all had some
form of PTSD, so I saw it as an
opportunity;' Dalton said.
"They are one-sided conver-
sations and they are descrip-
tions of events the soldiers
experienced that obviously
would make anybody shiver'.'
Dalton also said he had to
remained focused on just what
his uncle wrote about He did
think of including information
about significant events and
battles his uncle wasn't a part of
or aware of at the time, but
decided not to.
"There are times when
events happened in the war like
the allies landing in Italy and
when the Germans went to the
Russian front, but he doesn't
even mention those because he
was too busy trying to stay alive
with the guys in Western
Europe, Dalton said.
"I didn't stray from the con-
tents of the diary at all, because
then where do you stop?"
Dalton said the book was a
lot ofwork, but he is overall very
happy with how it has turned
out
"Itwas a heck of a project," he
said. "It was all I did for four-
and-a-halfyears. Itwas difficult
and every morning I would get
up and say, 'how much longer
is this going to takee"
Dalton received a lot of help
and support from family and
friends, whether it was through
editing and proofreading, or
helping in his Second World
War research. He also received
a lot of financial backing from
them through a Kickstarter
campaign, which assisted him
in his expenses.
"If it weren't for Kickstarter
and the good people who
donated money, I never could
have afforded to printit," Dalton
said.
While his original intention
was that it not be an homage to
his uncle in some ways it has
tumed out to be that And while
he dedicated the book to his
own father, Dennis, he said it is
also a tribute to all of those who
died in the war.
