NOVEMBER -
THE TOP MONTH
FOR DEER HITS
(HURON COUNTY, ON) - Huron
County Ontario Provincial Police
(OPP) would like to remind
motorists to take extra caution
and be prepared for deer on the
roadway this time of the year.
Historically, November is the
month when Huron County OPP
experiences the highest num-
ber of motor vehicle collisions
involving deer.
One week into November 2016
Huron County OPP has inves-
tigated 10 collisions involving
deer. Last year Huron County
OPP investigated a total of 56
deer crashes for the month of
November.
Did you know nearly one third
of all crashes investigated by
Huron OPP in 2015 were for deer
crashes? At this point in 2016,
the total number of deer crashes
in Huron County is trending
lower however with two of the
busiest months upcoming offic-
ers are hoping some further
reminders to the travelling public
will see this trend continue.
Certainly knowing that deer are
on the move this time of year is
helpful, equally important is for
motorists to know where the
deer are moving. Huron OPP has
identified a list of "Hot Spots"
throughout the county. Based on
OPP data the following areas in
Huron County have been identi-
fied as "Hot Spots"
• Bluewater Veterans Highway
(Highway 21) between Black's
Point Road & Union Road
• Amberley Road (County 86)
near Brussels Line (County 12)
• Huron Road (Highway 8) near
Holmes Street
• Brussels Line (County 12) near
Cranbrook Road
• Huron Road (Highway 8) near
Front Road
• Huron Road (Highway 8) near
Pondsview Road.
Knowing when and where the
collisions are taking place is cer-
tainly helpful, however if you do
encounter a deer during your
travels please remember, "Don't
Veer for Deer". Huron County
OPP routinely investigates
motor vehicle collisions where
the driver takes evasive action
by swerving to avoid a deer on
the roadway. Often this results
in the driver losing control and
leaving the roadway, which may
result in occupants sustaining
serious injuries.
Should you become involved in a
collision please remember:
• Stay calm and pull your vehi-
cle off to the side of the road as
far as possible. Activate your
4 -way flashers. Be visible and
be aware of other vehicles when
outside of your vehicle.
• Call 9-1-1 if you or your pas-
sengers are injured. If nobody
is injured and the dollar value of
the damage exceeds $2,000, you
are required to report the colli-
sion to police as soon as possi-
ble. Use the non -emergent line,
1-888-310-1122.
Remember, when you see the
deer warning signs please slow
down and take caution, the signs
are there for a reason.
