At their November
8 meeting,
the name was
changed to simply
Central Huron BIA

The vote ended up being
almost unanimous - the Clinton
and Central Huron BIA is now
simply the Central Huron BIA.
The change is an invitation to
unite all the different communi-
ties in the municipality and to
help brand the area.
While some members of the
BIA were hoping for a larger
turnout to the November 8
meeting when the name was
voted upon, only around 8
members were present. How-
ever they did receive several
emails and recommendations
from business owners in the
community, and their voices
were a part of the discussion last
Tuesday night.
One argument against the
name change was that Central
Huron is not on a map. Another
was that in other municipalities,
the BIA is attached to different
towns, not to the municipality as
a whole. For example the Brus-
sels BIA and the Seaforth BIA
are both a part of Huron East,
however they have their own
respective BIAs.
That led to the question if they
should name themselves Clin-
ton BIA, as they were named
years ago. However they argued
that is going "backwards" and
doesn't encapsulate the unity
they are aiming for.
In defense for the change, the
new name is easier to say and
will go nicely with the new
branding initiatives being done
by the BIA which includes all of
Central Huron; there are lots of
conversations happening at the

BIA and council regarding how
to brand and market the munic-
ipality as a whole.
The BIA has discussed putting
banners up in Clinton and the
various hamlets of Central
Huron, and Robinson com-
mented that the vote "was to
move the branding forward with
cleaner, simpler lines on ban-
ners." She said they want to "hit
the ground [running] in Janu-
ary" for branding initiatives.
One point against the name
change is that if businesses are
not in the "catchment" area of
Clinton itself, they must pay a
$150 fee annually to be a part of
the BIA and one top of that they
cannot vote in meetings.
This catchment area does not
even include all of Clinton; busi-
nesses that are not central are
not included, for example Lil's

Kitchen and Sun Country Farms
on the south end of town are not
in this area. This has become
increasingly problematic as
more businesses are popping up
in more outer areas of town and
not in the main core.
However, BIA co-chair Tricia
Robinson said addressing this is
the "next step" after this vote.
The catchment area is a long-
standing municipal rule involv-
ing tax levies for businesses. So
changing that will be a process
that involves council. However
the Central Huron BIA is plan-
ning to bringing it up to council
soon.
Robinson commented that if
events are clearly still for Clin-
ton, they will be designated as
such, for example Clinton's
Ladies Night, which is coming
up on November 24.
