Something magical came over Goderich Saturday,
Oct. 29, as its downtown square underwent a
metamorphosis.
Elizabeth's Art Gallerywas no more and in its place
was Scrivenshaft's Quill Shop. The CIBC was trans-
formed into Gringotts Bank And the Huron Historic
Gaol proved its true identity to be Azkaban, a jail for
wizards who breakwizardinglaws.
And everywhere were Harry Potters and Hermiones,
Rons and Prot Snapes, of all sizes and ages as Goderich
became the home, at least for one day, to the world of
the J.K. Bowling characters for the first annual Harry
Potter and the Transfigured Town event
The transformation was in full effect at 10 a.m. with
the event's main activity being the 2016 Poly Wizard
Cup, which was a scavenger hunt that took the esti-
mated 1,200 participates to 24 locations that had under-
gone a Harry Potter makeover.
Keara Flood, 14, had come from Stratford with her
friends, to indulge in her fantasies of cosplaying as her
favourite Harry Potter character and pretending to live
in that world.
"They are trying to make it seem like we're in the
actual world;" she told The Signal Star as the group
was working on the scavenger hunt. ':.. Everything
has been transformed into the Harry Potter world
and we're going to all the different shops and
exploring:'
Youth learn to make a craft at the Huron County Library
while an adult dressed as Prof. Snape from the Harry
Potter universe looks on.
Many people went all out making their own costumes
The main attraction was the Huron County
museum, which was also the starting point of the
scavenger hunt, where participants toured as wiz-
ards to leam about the muggle (non -wizard) world.
Karen Larke, dressed as Bellatrix Lestrange, was
with her daughter and her friends from Waterloo
touring the town and said the event is a celebration
of their fandom.
"The organizers did a great job. It feels very
authentic" she said. "I think it's a celebration for peo-
ple who want to dress up and experience the life of
Harry Potter for a day. That's what it feels like to me.
There are people who are really into the books, really
into the movies. They're here dressed up like we are
because they really love the story:'
Larke and her party said they would most "defi-
nitely" be back next year.
And there will be a next year, according to organ-
izer Nathan Swartz of the Huron Food Action Net-
work who said they are looking to expanding it to
three days based on the success they saw this year.
He said many of the people who bought tickets for
the event were coming from as far as Texas, USA and
Quebec with a large portion of those buying tickets
from Toronto and Hamilton.
He said this is because those were the people they
were targeting with their social media campaign
because "first and foremost, we really wanted to pro-
mote Huron County as a place to go to for tourism:'
