Clinton News Record, 2016-11-09, Page 66 News Record • Wednesday, November 9, 2016 New Community Improvement Coordinator Justine Alkema Clinton News Record Last week, Angela Smith began full time work as Cen- tral Huron's new Community Improvement Coordinator (CIC). The position is exactly as the name implies - an indi- vidual who plans and organ- izes beneficial initiatives for the municipality. This position has been vacant for several years. For a brief period between the last CIC and Smith, Central Huron worked in partnership with Bluewater and hired an Eco- nomic Development Officer. However that didn't find its footing and that person left; so council revisited the issue and determined they'd rely on the county for economic develop- ment and on the local level hire a CIC. Smith has worked on pay- roll for the past six and a half years for the municipality and has been easing into the posi- tion working part-time since June. However even in this short period of time, much of the work she has done so far has made a positive impact in the community. Some of her projects until this point include working on the new park in the empty lot on Albert Street, the Remem- brance Day banners, the May- or's Mingle, the OLG walka- bout and working in collaboration with the com- mittee to improve Clinton Community Park with a splash pad, skate park and new playground equipment. Smith reflected on seeing the job posting go up saying, "I thought the job would be a great fit for me; I like the challenge of different projects all the time and that every day is different" The job posting asked for experience with websites, graphics and event planning, and Smith has had some experience with those things. For a couple of years, Smith, who lives on a farm outside of Dublin, was co-chair of the BIA in Seaforth while she worked as an account man- ager at CIBC. Through that, she gained some experience with small beautification pro- jects downtown. Smith has a diploma in municipal administration and real estate assessment as well as her professional photogra- phy designation. Some people may know Smith through her photogra- phy work; over the past 17 years, she has photographed countless events and people in the area. As for the future, Smith mentioned that council has a lot of ideas for projects they'd like Smith to spearhead. Resi- dents can keep their eyes and ears open for upcoming com- munity improvement initiatives. "So far, the job is going great," said Smith. "I've met so many incredible people in town that are exited to see projects move forward, and the support has been incredi- ble from the various members of the community:' "It's very rewarding when you see visual things coming together [such as] on Albert Street to see the downtown look so much nicer and more usable. We have many small projects on the horizon to keep the momentum going."
