Five years ago, in a very
grassroots approach,
MILKS (Mothers Initiating
Lactation Knowledge and
Support) was created in
Huron County.
Most recently, the
group's 12 peer support-
ers, who are all volun-
teers, were trained with
the most up to date infor-
mation on this topic.
This new training on
assisting breastfeeding
moms comes from the Best
Start Resource Centre, a
key program of health pro-
motion organization
Health Nexus. It is a part of
the "Baby Friendly Initia-
tive", an initiative that
places heavy emphasis on
peer support. Huron
County Health Unit is the
first in Ontario to offer this
new training.
MILKS and their peer
supporters help run

locations around the
county four times per
month. Those get togeth-

moms gathering to ask

issues. Sometimes they
have guest speakers and
other events.
MILKS was started by
resident Karri Sonke and
Huron Health Unit Public
Nurse Amy Leduc. The two
women were talking about
how great it was when the
county used to have
"Breastfeeding Buddies", a
similar program to MILKS.
So, they decided to start a
group up again.
They recruited other

fashion, things started hap-
pening. It took on more
momentum as volunteers
and peer supporters got on
board.
One thing that really sur-
prised the women who
started MILKS was how
popular the Facebook
group became; it currently
sits at over 550 members
and is an important source
for women around Huron
County.
MILKS is a free program;
their Facebook page is
called MILKS Breastfeed-
ing Support.
