female Huron County
paramedic on receiving
20 years' service award

Marion Taylor was one of four
Huron County paramedics hon-
oured Sept 29 for 20 years of excep-
tional service as a paramedic.
During the 2016 Ontario Associa-
tion of Paramedic Chiefs' EMS
Honours and Awards Gala in
Collingwood she, along with Huron
Countyparamedics Jeff Horseman,
Mark Crawford and William Lewis,
and 95 other Ontario EMS person-
nel, received the Emergency Medi-
cal Services Exemplary Service
Medal.
"It's a huge honour" Marion told
The Signal Star outside the county
courthouse where Huron council
marked upon their achievement
Oct. 19.
Howeve> her road to this accom-
plishment was not an easy one,
which to her makes the honour that
much more monumental.
Not only was it difficult for the
Grand Bend resident to secure a
full-time position as an EMS,
spending the first 16 years of her
career working three part-time
positions (two as a paramedic and
one as an emergency room nurse),
which don't count towards the 20
years' requirement for the medal,
but that she's had to combat public
perception that being a paramedic
is a man's job.
Of the 99 medals handed out for
exemplary performance with at
least 20 years of service in late Sep-
tember, 20 went to female
paramedics.
"It's huge, actually. It's reallyhuge
because some people still think
you're doing a man's job and it's not
anymore," she said. "It means a lot.
I know that sounds hokey but I'm
teary. It means a lot"
She said that it has been difficult
to gain the same respect from the
public that it gives to her male
counter parts.
When she started her career in
1984 she was the only female work-
ing
orking out of Wmgham, she said, add-
ing that there may have been
another woman working out of
Goderich back then.
"Itjust didn't happen',' she said
And because of the lackoffemales
in the profession and the sexism of
the time, people didnot expectherto
perform as goodajob as aman.
"We had patients that wouldn't
talk to us because I was a girl. We
had people who wouldn't aclmowl-
edgeyou
Even today, after over three dec-
ades in the profession, some people
still think she is not fit for the job.
"You always get asked, 'do you
need help with a lift?' My male part-
ner never gets asked that but I still
get asked that. So you're still trying
to pave the road and show that you
can do that job" she said.
However, the perception is
changing, and will continue to, as
about 50 per cent of paramedics are
nowwomen, she estimated.
"It is better," she said. "There's
more acceptance because there's
more women out there now."
Her mother, Doreen Taylor, said
she is "extremely proud" of her
daughter and that she receives
phone calls from members of the
public praising her on Marion's
professionalism and capabilities.
"We are extremely proud, with
tears in my eyes," she said, on behalf
of herself and Marion's father, Bill
Taylor.
Since the award was created in
1994 by the late Governor General
Romeo LeBlanc only 1,750 Ontario
paramedics have received the
award.

Thunder rains down on Radars
Isn Tillsonburg on
aturday, October
29, the Radars ran into a
brickwall of a goalie
named Tommy Lee. Lee
was cut loose by the
Radars last year, but on
this night he came back to
haunt his old team as he
stopped 60 shots enroute
to a 6-3 win.
Marc Nother who
replaced Lee in the
Radar's net lastyearwas
off his usual game and
managed to stop 40 shots.
Penalties did not even fac-
tor into this contest as the
Thunders had 12 minutes
to the Radars' 6 minutes
in the sin bin.
In the fist period, Till-
sonburg jumped out to a
2-O lead as Ryan Stephen-
son and Matt Pasztor
scored at 14:52 and 15:35
respectively. The Radars
managed to cut the lead
to 2-1 by the end of the
period as Kyle Provily
scored while on the
power play at 18:26. He
Joey's Corner
Joe Livermore
managed to gather up a
loose puck in front of the
cage on a slapshottaken
by Mike Jarmuth. Luke
Vickwas also given as
assist on the play.
In the second stanza,
Tilllsonburg's Chad Bar -
day increased the Thun-
der lead to 3-1 at 1:32 on a
sloppily played puck by
Nother, but the Radars cut
the lead again to 3-2 at
9:40 as Matt Silaturo fin-
ished off a two on one
rush after a Thunder give-
away in the neutral zone.
But the Thunders came
roaring back with two
quick markers by Chad
Barclay at 12:47 and 16:16
to end the period leading
5-2. It was Barclay's first
hat trick of the season.
From a spectator's
point of view, itwas one of
the sloppiest periods the
Radars have played for
quite sometime. And to
make matters worse, the
Radars led in shots after
two periods 39 to 26 as
they had a rough time in
trying to put the puck into
the net behind averyhot
goalie in Tommy Lee.
In the third period, the
teams traded goals as
Radar's Kurds Barliff and
the Thunder's Dylan
Thomas each scored. The
Radars dropped out of first
place with their first regula-
tionlossoftheseason.
This weekend they
travel to Shallow Lake on
Friday night for an 8:30
p.m. start, and on Satur-
daytheyhit the road again
to play against the Ripley
Wolves at 7:30.
The Radar's next game
at home will be on Friday,
November 11 at 8:30 p.m.
against the Luclmow
Lancers.
