Justine Alkema Clinton News Record Clinton residents have enjoyed a local farmers' market for the last couple of years, but unfortunately the market will not be returning this summer. The main reason for this is that Wingham opened a farmer's market on the exact same day and time as Clinton's market. This drew away many of Clinton's vendors since Wingham provides a larger venue for the businesses. Switching the market to another day or time proved difficult for several reasons. Firstly, there was no one to take on the project. Since the market was started by the BIA with no paid staff, it was already a huge amount of work for its volunteers. ,Fir9.11:ent9J,21,1 Toteite *tte,t 17et 21144 are 740.6 Aea avre/te4: j; Clinton United Church 105 Ontario Street 519-482-9553 www. cl i nto n u n ited. ca Ministry Team Word and Sacrament: Rev. Also, there are already many markets in the area at various times, making it difficult to find a time that works. Some of these include markets in Brussles and Bayfield on Fridays, Exeter on Thursdays, and a large market in Goderich on Saturdays. At this point, people are encouraged to visit those markets. "It is really disappointing for the people coming out and for the vendors," said Sandy Garnet who helped organize the market. "We did just jump into it because were really excited about it, and the customers were asking for it. But it didn't fly like we hoped it would." The Clinton market had 9 vendors for quite a while and a core group of cus- tomers which helped it continue to operate. How- ever it was a bit of a strug- gle to get new and younger families. The market was held on Wednesdays, and some peo- ple asked that it be on Satur- days. However that wouldn't work as competing with Goderich's Saturday market was not feasible. One consolation is that local grocery stores are try- ing to bring in more local good. Garnet, who was a key figure in initiating the project and also owns the store Made in Huron, is try- ing to bring more local food into her store. Made in Huron features local cheese, preserves, frozen meats, pies and more. clintonnewsrecord.com cif .JC Jack Finlayson May 23 Wesley Lizotte May 23 Levi Veenstra May 24 Hailynn Greidanus May 24 Peyton Lobb May 25 Felix Dawe May 26 Carson Williamson May 30 Hayley Davidson May 31 AlexWammes May31 Teaguen Edwards May31 Avery Grist June 1 Kinley Wood June 1 Aaron Feddes June 2 If you wish to have your childs name & birthdate in the Birthday Club for ages 1-12, please call the office, it's free. 519-482-3443 Hey Kids!
