Alzheimer's around Clinton. Walk for Alzheimer's helps in Huron County Laura Broadley Goderich Signal Star Over 100 people took to the streets of Clinton last Sat- urday for the annual Walk for Alzheimer's, raising rais- ing much-needed money for the Alzheimer Society of Huron County. Black and green t -shirts, emblazoned with "Team Howie" were a big part of the crowd walking down Main Street. This year the Bernard fam- ily from Brussels was chosen as the honourary family for the walls. The Bernard family was chosen because they embody the principles of caring for someone with the disease. When their father and husband, Howie was diagnosed in 2011, his family sought help right away. Having a honourary family is a way for the society to con- nect what it does with the community, said Erin Dale, community outreach coordi- nator with the Alzheimer Society of Huron County. This is only the second year the Alzheimer Society of Huron County has held a Walk for Alzheimer's to help raise money for the 747,000 Canadians living with dementia. In the previous two dec- ades there has been a Walk for Memories held indoors in January during Alzhei- mer's Awareness Month. By moving the event outside it would bring more visibility to the work the society does, and help promote the fund- raising efforts of the events, Dale said. By changing the name, it encourages people to use the word "Alzheimer's" pub- licly to help fight the stigma surrounding dementia. Last year the society did one walk for all of Huron County in Clinton, but this year it held three separate walks in Clinton, Wingham and Exeter. This allowed people to participate who might not be able to travel across the county, Dale said. All the funds raised through the Walk for Alzhei- mer's stays in Huron County to support the programs and services offered by the Alz- heimer's Society of Huron County, like Minds in Motion, care partner sup- ports services and counselling.
