Champions at last
Radars take 3-0 series lead
The Clinton Radars are
one step more from winning
the Senior AA Champion-
ship as they skated to a 4-1
victory in Palmerston last
Friday night, March 25. The
game was played in front of
a jam-packed crowd. With
the win the Radars lead the
Mapleton Minto 81's three
games to none and could
clinch the championship
tomorrow night in what
hopefully will be their first
championship in 20 years of
Radar hockey.
The Radars opened up the
scoring at 3:47 of the first
period on a powerplay
marker from high -flying for-
ward Luke Vick. The goal
was set up by Kurtis Bartliff
and Mike Jarmuth. After tak-
ing a pass from Bartliff, Vick
found the upper left hand
corner from the top of the
circle. At 11:41 Vick made it
2-0 as Stefan Salituro and
Ryan Murphy picked up the
helpers. The game
Joey's Corner
Joe Livermore
continued at a fast pace with
both teams having glorious
scoring chances. But at
14:47, Minto's Joel Martinelli
beat Clinton goalie Marc
Nother on a beautiful 2 -on -1
rush. The game became a
real chippy affair as the ref-
erees whistled both teams
for different infractions. The
Radars outshot Minto 16 to
14 after one period.
In the second stanza Ryan
Murphy, who has been bat-
tling mononucleosis, gave
the Radars a 3-1 lead at the
0:46 mark. Tyler Doig set up
the marker as he faked a
slap shot at the top of the
right hand circle and then
fed speedy Ryan Murphy
with a perfect pass at the left
hand circle and scored in a
wide open net. At 17:57 Kur-
tis Bartliff made it 4-1 as he
beat the Minto goalie on a
breakaway. The play started
when Tyler Doig hit Bartliff
with a perfect pass up the
middle. Bartliff outraced the
Minto defender and geat the
goalie cleanly.
In the third period there
was no scoring as both
teams were thwarted by the
goalies. Clinton's forwards
Reid Oliver, Deryk White-
head, Brendan Dale and
Kurtis Bartliff played excel-
lent defensive games as they
killed off numerous penal-
ties. Once again, Radar
goalie played a strong game
as he stopped 36 shots. The
game was very chippy
throughout as Clinton took
16 minor penalties, 1 gross
misconduct and one
10 -minute misconduct.

Minto was whistled for 12
minors, two 10 -minute mis-
conducts. The Radars
defence core of Josh Cornel-
lisen, Mike Jarmuth, Tyler
Bryson, Kyle Provily, Marcus
Salo and Taylor Gussett
played very strong games on
the blue line killing off
numerous penalties.
Clinton could wrap up the
series in 4 straight wins with
a win on Saturday night.
Champions at last
The Clinton Radars are
now the champions of Sen-
ior AA Hockey as they swept
the Mapleton Minto 81's 4
straight on Saturday, March
26. It took 20 years of hockey
to win their first ever cham-
pionship in front of a packed
house of an estimated crowd
of 1,500. As the end of the
game wound down the
crowd went crazy in cheer-
ing and shouting. When the
final buzzer did go off the
Radars had scored a 7-3 vic-
tory. The fans cheered wildly
as each Radar player hugged
each other. After the hand-
shaking the players on both
sides lined up at the blue
lines as WOAA president
Allan Dickson presented the
championship trophy to
captain Mike Jarmuth and
assistant captain Tyler Doig,
Luke Vick and Kurtis Bartliff.
The crowd hung around for
several minutes as the play-
ers circled the ice surface
with the championship tro-
phy. One by one the players
handed off the trophy to
each other. The players then
gathered into the traditional
team picture by falling down
on the ice at centre ice. After
that, family and friends
came onto the ice surface
for pictures and more hug-
ging. When the players did
leave the ice surface, more
celebration took place in the
dressing room as the cham-
pagne bottle went popping
off.
The game itself was
played at a high tempo as
both teams showed why
they ended up in first place
in league play. The Radars
roared out of the gate first as
Stefan Salituro scored at 1:16
with a shot through the five
hole from close in. Luke Vick
earned an assist on the play.
At 6:42 while on the power-
play Kurtis Bartliff scored his
first of 3 as he took a cross -
ice pass from Tyler Doig to
give Clinton a 2-0 lead after
one period.
In the second stanza Clin-
ton increased their lead at 3-0
at 2:08. Once again Deryk
Whitehead found a space
through the five hole. Marcus
Salo and Tyler Bryson, who
both played a strong defen-
sive game, helped on White -
head's goal. A minute later at
3:09 Kurtis Bartliff scored his
second goal as he jammed
home a goal in front of the
goal crease after Sean Consitt
took the initial shot. At that
point Minto seemed to catch
fire as they scored 3 straight
goals from the sticks of Zach
Graham at 9:55, Joel Mar-
tinelli at 11:38 and Andrew
Coburn at 14:10 while on the
powerplay. The second
period ended with the Radars
clinging onto a 4-3 lead.
It was all Radars in the third
period as they scored 3 unan-
swered goals to secure the
victory. First it was Tyler Doig
scoring at 5:45 on a beautiful
to drag goal from Kurtis Bar-
tliff. At 9:58 Luke Vick took a
pass from Ryan Murphy and
drilled it past the Minto
goalie. Finally, Kurtis Bartliff
finished off with a hat trick
goal to make the final score
7-3.
The town can be proud of
Radar hockey over the last 20
years and the Radars can be
proud to have a good follow-
ing to both home and away
games. The players them-
selves thank the fans for their
support over the years and
they have finally been
rewarded. Hard work scout-
ing and finding good skilled
players are very important.
Coach Jim Fritzley deserves a
lot of credit for the job he has
done this year.
As the players said this year
"Our fans are the best Thanks
for your support. It all came to
place for this successful year."
Finally, "Let's enjoy this and
come back again next fall
ready to repeat:'
Thanks to all executive
members for your hard work
and dedication. You all
deserve a pat on the back.
