Radars Edge Squires in six meet Maple Minto 81's in WOAA finals
Submitted by Doug Shropshall
Clinton Radars
played two games
against the Petrolia Squires
this past weekend winning
both to win the series in six
games. The Radars have won
the Southern Division of the
WOAA and are moving on to
the finals of the WOAA and
will play against the North-
ern Division champions
Maple Minto 81's.
Friday, March 11, the
Radars hosted game five
before a packed house at the
Clinton Arena. This was the
best played game of the
series with both teams
Joey's Corner
Joe Livermore
coming to play hockey.
There was plenty of action
with the goaltenders stealing
the show. Potrolia's goal -
tender Houle, a product of
the London Knights, facing
57 shots, made numerous
unbelievable saves. Radars
goaltender Nothers, who
played for the Western Mus-
tangs, not wanting to be left
out, made 31 stops and key
saves, keeping this a thriller
from start to finish.
Both teams stayed out of
the penalty box with twenty
minutes total between the
two teams through the
whole game, 12 for Petrolia
and 8 for Clinton. The teams
were scoreless after 2 peri-
ods, entering the third tied
0-0.
Petrolia opened the scoring
with 4:52 left in the game giv-
ing the Squires a 1-0 lead. The
Radars, not wanting to be
undone, continued pressing
hard and 2:28 left in the game
time the score 1-1. Goal scorer
was Stephan Salituro assisted
by Luke Vick and Ryan Mur-
phy. This sent the game into
overtime and the fans were
buzzing with excitement.
Action continued at a fast
pace with both teams having
numerous chances, again the
goaltenders meeting the chal-
lenge. The 5:29 into overtime
Clinton native Brendan Dale
unassisted scored the winner
giving the Radars a 2-1 win
and the series lead 3-2 head-
ing back to Petrolia.
Stephan Salituro played the
best game of this Radar career,
forechecking and making sev-
eral key hits, setting up a num-
ber of opportunities for his
team mates.
Game six was in Petrolia on
Saturday night, March 12. The
game started at 6:30 p.m. Both
teams had full benches. The
ice surface in Petrolia is small
compared to the Clinton
arena and lots of scoring was
seen by all who attended.
Radars came out flying in
the first scoring 4 goals taking
a 4-0 lead after the first period.
The first goal was scored 3:32
into the period by Mitch Van-
dergunst assisted by Shayne
McClure. A little over 2 min-
utes later at 14:09 Radars
made it 2-0. Goal scored by
Stephan Salituro assisted by
Derek Whitehead. Then at
12:10 Ryan Murphy scored
assisted by Stephan Salituro
and Luke Vick. Radars scored
the fourth goal with 5:57 left in
the period with Ryan Murphy
scoring his second goal of the
period with Mitch Vander-
gunst assisting.
Radars started the scoring
44 seconds into the second
period with Josh Cornelissen
giving the Radars a 5-0 lead.
Assisting on the goal Tyler
Doig and Kurtis Bartliff. The
Clinton Radars then relaxed
and stopped skating, took a
number of penalties, and
allowed the Squires to slowly
get back into the game. Score
end of second period 5-2
Radars.
