Huron Centennial School
(HCS) welcomed their bud-
dies from London School in
Mexico during an assembly
held Februrary 29. The visit-
ing students will share their
Canadian experience with
Huron Centennial School in
Brucefield from February 28
to March 13.
Gabriela Parejo, Local
Coordinator for Huron -Perth
explains, "Red Leaf Student
Programs brings Interna-
tional Students from around
the world to experience life
as Canadians for different
programs and periods of
time." The program involved
in the assembly is a group of
20 students between the
ages of 10-12 and two teach-
ers from London School, a
bilingual elementary school
in Cuernavaca Mexico. The
international students are
matched with a host school
and each participant is
assigned to a class buddy.
Parejo states, "The students
will experience the
Canadian academic life for a
few weeks, attending a
school with Canadian stu-
dents while living with a
Canadian host family. While
here they enjoy an educa-
tional and cultural experi-
ence like no other."
Perajo gave an idea of
what the students have in
store for them during their
visit. "These are City kids
who have never seen the
snow before, so just imag-
ine the fun they are having
with the entire experience.
The kids get to participate
in community events, play
Canadian sports and do
rural activities. Every-
thing is new for them and
they are having a blast with
their Canadian families and
buddies. We also take them
on the big trips to Toronto
and Niagara falls where
we travel with our Cana-
dian buddies to make our
experience absolutely
unforgettable."

the program. Known to the
students as Miss Gabby,
she is responsible for the
group. Asked about her
current experience she
enthusiastically relates, "I
am shocked of the amazing
welcome we had." This
enthusiasm is shared by
Martha Huerta, the English
teacher who accompanies
her London School stu-
dents during their stay.
The morning assembly
on February 29 was the first
time that the Mexican stu-
dents were welcomed into
HCS. In her welcome
speech, HCS Principal
Carol Rauser stated that the
intent was to make the vis-
iting students feel at home.
She remarked that the
record-breaking warm tem-
peratures experienced on
Sunday, when the students
arrived in Brucefield, must
have been brought straight
from Mexico. Rauser
acknowledged that they
had been disappointed to
not arrive to Canadian
snow, but assured them
that there would be the
opportunity to experience
that before their visit was
over.
The HCS grade 3 and
grade 3-4 classes per-
formed the first song of the
assembly. "Canada in my
Pocket" is based on Cana-
dian coins and the symbols
that appear on each. The
London School students
were each presented with a
copy of the words to the

The grade 4 class sang
"Canada Is" which was
accompanied by a slide
show to help the visitors
realize the vastness of Can-
ada, even though they are
experiencing just a small
part firsthand.
The London School stu-
dents and their accompa-
nying adults were invited to
come to the front of the
gym. Their Canadian bud-
dies were then asked to
come to the front to present
the visitors with a red and
white knitted toque with a
maple leaf motif which
were made by the Hats and

itors put on their new hats
and for the first time fol-
lowed their Canadian bud-
dies back to sit with their
classes, becoming a part of
the student body.
Following the assembly
Principal Rauser stated,
"We welcome the opportu-
nity for Huron Centennial
students to learn of another
culture and to share with
our Mexican guests."
