Liberal Budget fails Huron -Bruce
Special to Clinton News Record
The Liberals' 2016 Budget is
putting a new tax on gasoline
and home -heating that will
make life more unaffordable
for families and seniors across
Ontario says Lisa Thompson,
MPP for Huron -Bruce.
"All across my riding I've
been hearing the same thing:
the cost of living is too high.
People are being forced to
choose between heating and
eating, and with this Budget,
unfortunately there is not a
break in sight," said
Thompson.
Included in the Budget is
the Liberals' proposed
cap -and -trade scheme, which
they say will only increase gas-
oline costs by 4.3 cents a litre
and natural gas costs by $60 a
year. However, private -sector
estimates show that the long-
term cost impact on families
will be much higher, increas-
ing the cost of gasoline by
$400 a year and home -heating
by $475.
"What the Liberals have
failed to realize is the eco-
nomic toll this will have on
our smaller communities.
Here in Huron -Bruce, the Lib-
erals' Cap -and -Trade tax will
directly impact the ability of
industries such as farming,
tourism and small business to
remain competitive.
"Another red flag for me is
the reduction to the budget
for the Ministry of Agriculture,
Food and Rural Affairs," said
Thompson. "Ontario farmers
deserve to have a government
that supports them:'
"The only good that I can
see coming from this Budget
is the commitment to
increased spending for special
needs students, enhancing
autism services, hospice and
palliative care. I've advocated
for better support in these
areas, and I'll be working to
ensure that Huron -Bruce
receives its fair share of these
funds."
