Walk for ALS in
Wingham coming up
The Walk for ALS, which
started in 2004, is the largest
fundraiser for the ALS Socie-
ties across Canada to fight
ALS (amyotrophic lateral
sclerosis) and provide sup-
port for Canadians living
with the disease. 23 commu-
nities in Ontario will be host-
ing a walk.
The 11th annual five -kil-
ometer Walk for ALS in
Wingham is set for June 25.
Registration is at 9 a.m. at
Lion's Pavilion Riverside
Park.
Proceeds from the walk
will go to supporting people
living with ALS in Ontario
and funding Canadian ALS
research.
Proceeds for supporting
people living with ALS will
cover home visits, support
groups and equipment. It
will also cover interfacing,
liaising and advocating with
the healthcare system.
Proceeds for research will
be given to ALS societies
across Canada to find a
treatment in the hopes of
making ALS a treatable
disease.
ALS Canada is the lead-
ing registered charity
focused on the terminal
disease. Founded in 1977,
ALS Canada is dedicated to
supporting Canadians liv-
ing with ALS and investing
in research to make ALS
treatable. They strive to fills
the gaps between the
healthcare system and
needs of people living with
ALS in the province. They
also advocate federally,
provincially and locally.
ALS is a terminal, neuro-
degenerative disease where
the nerve cells that control
muscles dies. This leads to a
loss of mobility, speech and
eventually a person's ability
to breathe.
Each year, roughly 3,000
Canadians are living with
ALS, and 80 per cent will die
within two to five years of
diagnosis. The cost of ALS to
an average family is $150,000
to $250,000 over the course
of the disease
The walk is a way to bring
together community to
remember and honour the
courage and strength of eve-
ryone who lives and has
lived with ALS. The walk
shows that coming together
makes a difference. Commu-
nity support is vital to
improve the quality of life of
people living with ALS and
fund research to find a
treatment.

walk in Wingham at www.

• Every year Huron County sees the "Flame of Hope" carried through its streets. On
June 14, Huron County OPP participated in the annual event by gathering a group of
people to carry the torch through Wingham, Blyth, Clinton before coming to its final
stop in Goderich. For 19 years Huron County OPP Sergeant Russ Nesbitt has been a
part of the event. He estimated that it has raised about $150,000 to support Special
Olympics athletes.
