Lots of them. There have been around 15 sightings of black bears in the past three weeks. Some places where they have been seen are north of Goderich, Port Albert, near Bayfield, near Kippen, Auburn, Morrison Dam, near Holmesville and just north of Clinton. To put this in context, in 2014 and 2015, the area saw almost no bear activity. In 2013, there were 15 sightings in the entire year, nevermind three weeks, and that was the most they had seen in a very long time. They are coming down from the north, likely in search of food, commented Central Huron Animal Control Officer Bob Trick. He believes that since it was a cold spring, ber- ries weren't growing, so they came down here in search of food. "You must remember, they're very hungrythis time of year. They've come out of hiber- nation, so they're really looking for something to eat" Trick said to the Signal Star. "They're here to stay. If they have a good food source they likely aren't going to move away. Some advice that Trick had was to not to leave garbage out and to be careful when camping. Honouring Decoration Day The wreath laid at the Clinton cemetery on Decoration Day. Justine Alkema Clinton News Record A letter was written to the editor of the News Record regarding Decoration Day. It was from Wes and Mary Ann Chambers and appeared in the June 8 issue. It said the following: "Each year as Canadians, we observe two important dates to recognize and remember our veterans. These are Remem- brance Day and Decoration Day. While November 11 has long since became our annual day of Remembrance, Decoration Day dates back much further. Decoration Day was to not only honour the veterans who sur- vived the wars and came home, but to "decorate" the graves and monuments of our veterans lost inwai or later in life, with Cana- dian flags and flowers in the warmth of late spring or early summer'.' A memorial service for Deco- ration Day was held on Wednesday, June 15 at 7:00 p.m. at the Clinton Cemetery. As the letter indicated, Remembrance Day has become our day of remem- brance, and despite the invita- tion in the letter to the people of Clinton, only three people were in attendance on that evening. However some mentioned that the event was busier when it was on Father's Day, as it used to be, and some hadn't heard the eventwas happening. The procession included the legion colour party and pipe band. They marched to the flag and stopped there. At this point, legion executive Rick Shropshall led a short ceremony including several prayers and honouring those who fought. A wreathe was laid, and the processional marched on.
