Cowbell Brewery celebrates groundbreaking

The official groundbreak-
ing of the Cowbell Brewery
means years of planning are
coming to fruition. This sig-
nificant event marked the
beginning of construction
on the ambitious business.
They hope to be up and run-
ning by late spring or early
summer of 2017.
The business is ambitious
because it's not any old
brewery. It's unique and
extensive in what it offers. It
is on 59 acres and the ingre-
dients for the beer will be
grown on site. It will include
a 23 acre event and enter-
tainment site, a restaurant
and a bar.
They have forested 11,000
- 12,000 trees on site. Not
only does this provide trails
to be used for camping for
events, but it also offsets all
the carbon produced by the
operation. With these trees,
the business will be carbon
neutral.
"From beginning, we've
wanted to do things a little
differently," said Vice Presi-
dent and General Manager
Grant Sparling. "We've
descried it as a destination
brewery. We want it to be
about the experience of the
beer. It's from farm to tap."
Their first beer, the Absent
Landlord, has been launched.
For now, it is being contract
brewed in Hamilton. When
they have their own brewing
operation set up, they are
hoping to have 20-25 beers at
a time.
The Absent Landlord is
named after Henry Blyth.
Blyth, who was English, pur-
chased much of the town of
Blyth in 1877. However he
never made it to Canada to
actually see his purchase.
The beer is a Kolsch-style
light ale. It is unfiltered and
unpasteurized, and while it
has lots of great flavours, it is
also very approachable and
drinkable.
"It is absolutely flying off
the shelves," said Sparling.
It is available at 31 LCBOs,
but they encourage people
to check stock online before-
hand because they are often
sold out. They are hoping to
launch another beer in the
fall.
Their brewmaster has
around 10 years of experi-
ence and has brewed
upwards of 300-350 beers.
"He has a solid grasp on
what would be a good intro-
ductory beer," said Sparling.
After several tweaks and
test batches, they came up
with a product they loved,
and that become the Absent
Landlord.
They introduced the beer
on May 14 with a tasting, and
1004 people came out which
is the census population of
Blyth.
