New acting MOH at Huron Health UnitContributed photo Local RBCs donate to dog rescue Justine Alkema Clinton News Record Dr. Maarten Bokhout, a phy- sician at Clinton Public Hospi- tal, will be the new acting Medi- cal Officer of Health (MOH) at the Huron County Healthy Unit. This temporary position is from June 16 until October 18. Dr. Miriam Klassen previ- ously held this position on a two month contract from April until June after Dr. Janice Owen was let go in April. Dr. Klassen only signed onto a two month contract because she is already the MOH for Perth County. The Huron Health Unit is also con- sidering an amalgamation with the Perth Health Unit, so if that merger happens, it would be difficult for Dr. Lassen to nego- tiate both health unit sides in an amalgamation discussion. There are several reasons why Dr. Bokhout's position is temporary. First of all, Dr. Wil- liams, who is the Provincial Medical Officer of Health, advised against hiring a perma- nent position. One reason for this is the possible amalgama- tion. Since each health unit only needs one MOH, they would assume Perth County's MOH, who is Dr. Klassen. Since an amalgamation is possible, it's difficult to find someone to accept a perma- nent MOH position, as that job would not be long term in the case of a merger. Representatives from the Huron Health Unit are going to meet with Dr. Williams in the next couple weeks to ask for guidance for the future. Tyler Hessel, who is the mayor of Bluewater and the chair of the Board of Health, said there's talk of changing models and finances on the ministry level. They are meeting with Dr. Williams for advice about the MOH but also to make sure they're in the loop for what's going on in the minis- try. The ministry has also been hinting at mergers, so Huron Health has picked up on that. Hessle noted that things are getting more costly all the time, and they want to maintain a high standard. While an amal- gamation is not a sure thing by any means at this point, they are exploring the possibility to see if there is efficiency and opportunities in that. "Our ultimate goal is to pro- vide better service for both communities," said Hessel. Justine Alkema Clinton News Record The RBC's in Clinton and Exeter have been busy over the past month fundraising for Clinton's Bow Wow dog rescue. They successfully raised $1142 which will cover the cost of a much needed hip surgery for the shelter's German Shepherd, Angel. The Bow Wow Rescue can hold up to 11 dogs; it was originally a kennel that turned into a rescue. German shepherds often have hip problems, and Angel has need the operation for a while. However it's expensive, and there were no funds for it. With the funds raised, the surgery will be possible. "She's only 3 or 47 said Bow Wow's owner, Michelle Layton. "She's a sweet personality." The bank held several fundraisers including dress down days on Fri- days which the staff had to pay for to participate in and two bake sales to employees and clients. They also had pictures of their dogs with donations jars, so people could freely donate that way. "They all have dogs in their families," said Layton, "so they wanted to help out local dog rescue." clintonnewsrecord.com OFFICE HOURS The Office Hours for The Clinton News Record are as follows Mondays - 9am - 5pm Tuesdays - CLOSED Wednesdays - 9am - 5pm Thursdays - 9am - 5pm Fridays - 9am - 5pm 53 Albert St., Clinton, ON PH: 519-482-3443 • www.clintonnewsrecord.com Wednesday, June 15, 2016 • News Record 3 - - After a weeks rest to accommodate the Clinton Spring Fair, trotters and pacers were back in action at Clinton Raceway this past Sunday, June 12.
