Although they support numerous causes, their annual Walk for Dog Guides continues to be one of their major fundraisers. This year's Walk for Dog Guides was on June 5 in Bay- field, put on by the Bayfield Lions Club; this was the 31st year this event took place. The walk included many dogs and started at 9:00 a.m. at the Clan Gregor Square. However it was not just a dog walk. Following the walk, there was a number of activities and presentations all having to do with dogs including a hearing ear dog and owner, the London police K9 unit, therapy dogs, rescue dogs, presentations on dog nutrition and dog health and a full scale dog agility demonstration presented by Paws Effectiveness Training. There were even hot dogs. One highlight was Essex, Bay - field's own dog guide pup in training. Tom and Deb Grasby are fostering a yellow lab puppy for a year at which time he will be returned to the Lions Foun- dation Dog Guide Training Cen- tre in Oakville to complete his training. Participants were invited to collect pledge money, and last year they raised around $10,000 from the event. The are hoping to raise that much again" to "Participants were invited to collect pledge money, and last year they raised around $10,000 from the event. While most people associate guide dogs with the blind, there are actually six distinct types of dog guides. Each specific dog is trained in the stream which their personality and skills are best suited for. When Essex goes to the training centre in Oakville, they will determine what type of guide dog he will be. These six types of dog guides are: • Canine vision dog guides for people who are blind or visually impaired. • Hearing ear dog guides for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. • Service dog guides for peo- ple with physical disabilities. • Seizure response dog guides for people with epilepsy. • Autism assistance dog guides for children 3-12 years of age with autism spectrum disorder. • Diabetic alert dog guides for individuals with type 1 Diabetes with hypoglycemic unawareness "We are trying to turn the annual Dog Guide Walk into a gala event that will attract dog owners and dog lovers alike to honour man's best friend," said Lions member Jack Pal. "[We are also trying] to help support some of these unique dogs to become leaders in the service animal community:' Clinton lawn bowling results May 23 Men High - Erin Wheeler Second - Sam Bradica Third - Dennis Schmidt Ladies High - Sjoukje Steenbeek Second - Joan Beierling Third - Brenda Wheeler May 26 Men High - Sam Bradica Second - Robert Lee Third - Eric Wheeler Ladies High - Joan Beierling Second - Isabel McDonald Third - Cheryl Trewartha May 30 Men High - Sam Bradica Second - Allan Lavis Third - Eric Wheeler Ladies High - Joan Beierling Second - Isabel McDonald Third - Brenda Wheeler June 2 Men High - Robert Lee Second - Sam Bradica Ladies High - Cheryl Trewartha Second - Brenda Wheeler Third - Joan Beierling OFFICE HOURS The Office Hours for The Clinton News Record are as follows Mondays - 9am - 5pm Tuesdays - CLOSED Wednesdays - 9am - 5pm Thursdays - 9am - 5pm Fridays - 9am - 5pm 53 Albert St., Clinton, ON PH: 519-482-3443 • www.clintonnewsrecor o om
