Try the TD Summer Reading Club. This summer, kids are encouraged to escape their eve- ryday, step outside their ordi- nary, and seek the unknown and untamed through reading. Whether it's outdoors, outra- geous, or out of bounds, the unexplored is calling, and with the weekly TD Summer Read- ing Club, kids can let go and find their wild this summer. The TD Summer Reading Club is a free program for youth between the ages of four and twelve that encourages readers to have fun while learning through exciting crafts, activities, and games as well as reading. The reading club will meet once a week at all of the twelve Huron County Library branches starting on Monday, July 4 until Friday, August 26, 2016. This program hopes to engage children in reading throughout the summer months. Through the TD Summer Reading Club, children develop good listening skills, share with others in a team environment, and stimulate their creative capacity through arts and crafts, active play, and reading. Pro- grams such as this introduce children to the library as a source of pleasure and infor- mation which encourages them to use the library later on as our resources are tools for lifelong learning. You can register today by dropping in or calling your local library branch. All partic- ipants will receive a reading club notebook, pack of twelve stickers, top summer reads list, as well as a web -access code that can be used on the http: / /tdsummerreadingclub. ca website to track reading progress and receive addi- tional club benefits. This year's theme is "wild at heART" so get ready to unleash your imagination. You can find out more today by contacting your local Huron County Library branch or emailing summerreading@ huroncounty.ca. This local program is sponsored by the Toronto Dominion Financial Group. Prepare to get your reading on! Call or visit your local library branch for more infor- mation and to register for the TD Summer Reading Club. Protect yourself from mosquito and tick bites this summer As people spend more time outdoors, the Huron County Health Unit wants to remind the public to protect themselves against tick and mosquito bites. "With the warm weather here, ticks and mosquitoes are more active," says pub- lic health inspector Keshia Hackett. "Our mosquito and tick surveillance pro- grams are underway at the Huron County Health Unit': Our West Nile virus mos- quito trapping program will commence mid-June. West Nile virus is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. The easiest way to prevent infec- tion is to prevent mosquito bites, especially during dawn and dusk when many mos- quito species are most active. The Huron County Health Unit has submitted multi- ple ticks this year for identifica- tion. One tick was identified as a blacklegged tick that tested negative for the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. Lyme disease is spread through the bite of an infected black - legged tick. A tick must be attached and feeding for at least 24 hours before the tick will start to transmit the bacteria, so early detection and removal is important. While outdoors enjoying the beautiful weather, there are some precautions to take to prevent tick and mosquito bites: • Wear light-coloured, long- sleeved shirts, long pants and closed -toed shoes. • Use an insect repellent approved by Health Canada, and always read and follow the manufacturer's instructions. • Conduct head -to - toe tick checks. If you find a tick on you, remove it using tweezers, grasping the tickas close to the skin as possible and pulling straight out slowly but firmly. Place the tick in a container and bring it to your healthcare provider or the Huron County Health Unit for iden- tification and testing if needed.
