St. Anne's girls rugby fought valiantly
at OFSAA this year. They were seeded
7th of 16 teams competing at this year's
provincial championship. That meant
to start, they played the 10th seed, Bar-
rie North Collegiate. They were victori-
ous by a final score of 46-5. The girls
played tremendously and turned quite
a few heads with their stellar display.
Next they played the 2nd seed Tren-
ton Tigers who are the defending
champions. They've been in the gold
medal game for the last eight years,
winning six gold and two silver medals.
They lost the game 36-5.
This placed then on the consolation
side of the tournament. However the
Eagles bounced back against Jean
Vanier of Milton and won decisively
31-14 to advance to the consolation
semi finals on Wednesday morning.
They played through great adversity
and several injuries and were able to
win the consolation semi final 12-7 over
Courtice Secondary School. It was a
solid team effort, and the girls dis-
played enormous grit.
That win meant they advanced to the
consolation final three hours later against
the 6th seed of St. Michael, Niagara Falls.
It took herculean effort to summon the
energy required to play another top rugby
side but the St. Anne's girls battled right to
the final whistle. The score of 15 for Nia-
gara Falls and 7 for Clinton meant a 6th
place finish for the Eagles of St. Anne's.
Coach Ryan Clancy felt incredibly
proud of the girls. "It went better than I
could have hoped for," he said.
He noted that because of the way the
cards fell, they ended up playing the win-
ning team, the Trenton Tigers, in their
second game. They lost that game 36-5,
putting them on the consolation side.
However the Tigers won the champion
game 36-7, so the order of the games
affects the final placement.
All in all, it was a valiant three days, and
the Eagles hope to attend OFSAA for the
10th year in a row next year.
