Get to know your local town councillor
Justine Alkema
Clinton New Record
This eight-week column
features a different local
councillor each week. This
week's interview was with
deputy mayor Dave Jewitt.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Clinton and
am a lifelong resident of
Huron County. I like to
point out to friends that I've
shown a great deal of
movement in my life as I
have worked for the last 16
years two blocks from
where I grew up.
When and how did your
interest in municipal politics
originate?
I've always been inter-
ested in municipal politics
as it has the closest connec-
tion to people in the com-
munity. My family has been
involved in local politics for
many years with my grand-
father being a past warden
of Huron County while rep-
resenting the former Hullet
Township. I've also had a
number of relatives elected
as Council representatives
in their communities. As I
had been interested in poli-
tics for sometime I chose to
get my degree in Political
Science from Western Uni-
versity. I bought my first
home in Clinton a number
of years ago and at that
time wanted to have input
into the decisions being
made so put my name for-
ward and was fortunate
enough to be elected. I'm
currently in my fourth
term (two in the former
Town of Clinton and two
in Central Huron) and
have thoroughly enjoyed
every moment of my time
on Council.
What's your favourite thing
about the position?
I enjoy the challenge of
decision making and trying
to get things right for the
ratepayers that have placed
their trust in me as a mem-
ber of council. I like looking
at issues from every angle,
both pros and cons, and
making the best decision
which is reflective of the
greater interests of the
municipality. I've often said
that my time on municipal
council has been one of the
most rewarding personal
experiences I've had and
encourage anyone with an
interest in moving their
community forward to put
their name on the ballot
and try and make a positive
impact in peoples lives.
What's the most challenging
thing about the position?
The biggest challenge
for me is the frustration
that some people are still
being left behind in our
community. There are still
segments of our popula-
tion that are marginalized
and unable to effectively
utilize resources that may
help. We live in one of the
most agriculturally pro-
ductive areas of the prov-
ince, and yet we still have
food insecurity in our
Community. The fact that
any child should go to
sleep or wake up hungry is
anathema to me. There
has been some great work
by local agencies and vol-
unteers but as municipal
representatives we have to
do better. We need to
move beyond being sim-
ply a funding source and
through creativity and
ingenuity work to resolve
these issues.
