Huron County Cultural Passport ready for schools
The Huron County Cultural Passport is
once again ready for local host families
and international students. With newly
added attractions and events included,
the new passport promises to open up
the world of local arts, recreational, cul-
tural events and attractions to interna-
tional students and their host families in
Huron County.
In 2015, the Huron Arts & Heritage
Network (HAHN) in partnership with the
Huron Local Immigration Partnership,
created the first-ever Huron County Cul-
tural Passport for international students
and their host families. Well, this year's
edition is hot off the press and ready for
distribution.
This second updated and expanded
edition of the Cultural Passport offers dis-
counts to a wide variety of Huron County
fun and exciting arts, culture, heritage
and recreational activities including the
Alice Munro Festival of the Short Story,
Bayfield Fair, Blyth Festival, Exeter Rodeo,
Goderich Celtic Roots Festival, Goderich
Little Theatre, Huron County Multicul-
tural Festival, Huron County Museum
and Historic Gaol, Zurich Bean Festival
and Windmill Lake Wake & Eco Park.
Host families are eager to show visiting
students all there is in the area and
beyond. However, the costs of these trips
can add up and become a barrier for
some host families, who cover most of the
cost out of pocket.
"The Cultural Passport and the dis-
counts that the participating cultural
organizations have offered help make
exploration and participation in our local
culture a little easier and more affordable
for the students and their host families,"
says Rick Sickinger, Cultural Develop-
ment Officer. "Our hope is that this
increased access to our cultural events
and attractions will offer these visiting
students a better and more rewarding
understanding of what we are about in
Huron County."
Diane Hahn, Homestay Services
Coordinator with the Avon Maitland
District School Board, supports the
Cultural Passport by saying, "The pass-
port is a great addition to the choices
families make about showing their stu-
dents some of the wonderful activities
we have to offer. We very much wel-
come the Passport once again. It is a
wonderful way for families to enjoy the
local attractions and activities that we
sometimes take for granted. To see
things through the eyes of our interna-
tional students brings new life and
excitement to everyone:'
In the current school year there are
over 190 international students regis-
tered to attend Huron and Perth
schools. The Cultural Passports will be
distributed to host families of interna-
tional students through the Avon Mait-
land District School Board.

On Thursday May 17, the St.
Anne's girls rugby team
traveled to London with the
goal of winning their ninth
consecutive A/AA WOSSAA
title. The win would also allow
them to gain entry to the
OFSAA provincial champion-
ships on May 30. Standing in
their way were the Thames
Valley Regional champion
Lions of London South
Collegiate.
Knowing they had prepared
since February for this
moment, the Eagles opened
the match with some staunch
defense, forced an early turno-
ver and scored shortly thereaf-
ter. Building on a positive
start, St. Anne's continued to
press the issue and scored
again and again by controlling
their ball and running terrific
supporting lines that could
not be stopped by their
opponent.
While London was able to
sneak in a single score late in
the second half, the outcome
was never in doubt and St.
Anne's stood tall with a 55-5
victory thanks to 9 trys and 5
successful converts.

The performance was
impressive and most spectators
stated this was some of the best
high school rugby they had
seen all year. The Eagles will

Ontario region in Ottawa at the
end of the month and challenge

for OFSAA glory.
