admission is generally free,
although donations are appre-
ciated as always. Normally
when tours are booked, they
charge $5 per adult, $3 per
child, so these events provide a
great educational opportunity.
This historic railway car is a
unique cultural asset in Central
Huron, open to the public from
the long weekend in May to the
last week of September, Thurs-
day through Sunday, and on
holidays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Check out our Facebook page
at facebook.com/school car.
Details are also available at
www.centralhuron.ca.
"Amazing Aquatic Animals"
will be explored at the river on
Friday June 10, a school PD day,
from 1:30 to 3 p.m. The
Museum and the Ausable Bay-
field Conservation Authority
are partnering to provide a fun
and informative activity, with
special funding provided by the
ABCA Foundation. Children
will have an opportunity to try
hands on activities like those
enjoyed by students on the
school car years ago. Children
under the age of 12 must be
accompanied by an adult.
On Saturday June 11, from 12
CNR School on Wheels Museum in Clinton.
to 3:30 p.m., come and enjoy a
Pet Expo, with all friendly,
leashed dogs welcome. For this
event, the Huron County
OSPCA and P.E.T.S. Training
and Boarding Centre are assist-
ing to provide a fun and infor-
mation filled afternoon for dogs
and pet owners and pet lovers.
Scheduled events include a
pet (and pet owner) costume
contest at 12:15, and judges
may look favourably at railway
or school related costumes. At
1:15, dogs can compete by per-
forming tricks in two categories
- cute and difficult. Then Anita

provide a demonstration of
tricks. Pets can enjoy bobbing
for wieners and musical chairs,
as well as races (leashed dogs
with their handlers). There will
be prizes and activities for chil-
dren. They'd love to see some
community volunteers willing
to assist that day.
In the summer months, Judy
Keightleywill hold an outdoor
watercolour painting event on
Saturday July 16 from 2-3:30
p.m. To cover the cost of sup-
plies, there is a $10 fee for this
aftemoon. Those interested can
register by calling the Munici-
pality at 519.482.3997.
Next they are hosting a
drumming workshop taught by
Maggie Brennon on Sunday,
August 7 from 1-2:30 p.m.
Drums will be provided, how-
ever people are welcome to
bring their own. Admission is
free for this event, although
donations as always are wel-
comed. On Thursday August
18, the Clinton Legion Pipes
and Drums band will be per-
forming beginning at 7 p.m.,
although the Museum will be
open at 6:30 for tours. Bring a
lawn chair and enjoy.
The familiar "Thomas Day"
will retum on SaturdaySeptem-
ber 10 from 10 to 3 p.m. This is
an old favourite, drawing in
children (and adults) for many
years now. Does your child
recall sitting in the Thomas
model, generously supplied by
Fincher's Book Store in Goder-
ich? Admission is still free and
this year there are some new
activities. Parents (and grand-
parents) bring your children,
children bring your parents.

delivering education to chil-
dren in the province's most
remote areas. Fred and Cela
Sloman of Clinton were the
remarkable teachers who were
described as having the "mis-
sionaryspirit" and "self-sacrific-
ing devotion" needed to lead a
nomadic existence in a
cramped railcar with their five
children.
The Sloman Railway School
Car ran along the 150 mile route
between Capreol and Foloyet.
The car stayed two to six days at
regular stops along the way. As
the train whistle blew, the chil-
dren of railwayworkers, loggers,
trappers and natives came from
miles for their lessons.
A fire that severely damaged
the car nearly condemned it.
Miraculously, a former school
car student, Bill Stevenson, rec-
ognized the school car's num-
ber at a CN auction and con-
tacted the Sloman family. A
local board was formed to save
the car and bring it to Clinton.
The car was purchased and
transported by rail to Clinton in
1982.
At each of these summer
events, tours of the school car
will be hosted by our staff, Car-
olyn Brophy and Donna Har-
die. Since the CNR School on
Wheels Museum was listed in
Ron brown's book, "Unusual
Things to See in Ontario; it has
attracted tourists far and wide.
When included in the Shunpik
er's Mystery Tour in 2014, they
had over 1000 visitors that day.
Have you enjoyed the infor-
mational tour? Go and bring
your family. Group tours are
welcome, but please book in
advance by calling the Munici-
pality office at 519.482.3997.
