Rural Roots concert series Salvation Army Christmas in July
brings live music to the county
The Goderich Celtic Festival
has announced its 2016 Rural
Roots concert series, supported
in 2016 by the County of Huron
Heritage Fund.
"The Rural Roots concert
series takes advantage of the
stellar talent that we're able to
bring to Goderich as a part of
the Celtic College and Celtic
Roots Festival, and presents spe-
cial concerts in historic venues
in smaller areas," said artistic
director, Kate Johnston. "Many
of the thousands of visitors to
the area during Celtic week have
the opportunity to experience
more of the county, and the
wonderful communities in it."
Each Rural Roots concert is a
partnership between the Celtic
Roots Festival and a local non-
profit community group. Pro-
ceeds from each concert are split
between the two groups. All con-
certs are $20 general admission
seating and begin at 7:30 p.m.

this dynamic quartet!!
Aug. 2 - Teeswater Town Hall
Featured artist: Siobhan
Miller Band (Scotland)
Siobhan Miller is regarded as
one the finest singers to emerge
from Scotland's music scene over
the last decade. Her soulful and
stirring renewal of traditional
song has seen her win the Scots
Singer of the Year award twice at
the Scots Trad Music Awards.
She is also a recipient of a "BBC
Young Folk Award" with Orkney's
Jeana Leslie with whom she has
released two greatly received
albums. Miller began singing in
public in her early teens. Since
then, she has developed her style
through collaborations and stud-
ies with many of Scotland's top
musicians.
Aug. 3 - St Joseph's Kings-
bridge Church, Goderich
Featured artist: Bua (Ireland/
USA)
Bua evokes the good times
that Irish traditional music so
often celebrates, playing in a
manner largely forgotten in
today's overly polished Irish
music world. With a precision
and intensity that is rarely heard
on this side of the Atlantic, their
sound stands out among mod-
ern bands in the genre by keep-
ing the music down the path of
tradition while still being able to
raise the rafters with their play-
ing, charm with their singing,
and delight with their contem-
porary energy. Based in Chi-
cago, Illinois—along-celebrated
centre of Irish traditional
music—Bua has established
itself individually and as a group
in the eyes and ears of the tradi-
tional community.

Possible cougar spotted north of Goderich
There have been several
reports over that last few days
describing what is thought to be
a cougar in Ashfield Township.
Bob Trick, Huron County ani-
mal control officer, said he has
heard of the sightings, but has
not been able to confirm
whether or not there was a cou-
gar in the area.
Trick said he's not denying
there is one, but he hasn't been
able to find tracks and there's
been no pictures of it, some-
thing he expects with the availa-
bility of cameras on cell phones.
Trick said cougars eat meat,
and so they are usually spotted
where there's access to rabbits,
goats, calves and other
livestock.
Cougars are tree animals, and
they are nocturnal, so Trick is
warning people to be conscious
of their surroundings, especially
after 9 p.m.
In the meantime, Trick has set
traps and is waiting to see if any-
thing gets caught.
About four years ago, a study
was released that indicated the
Canadian cougar population
had made a comeback 100 years
after the animal was hunted to
near extinction.
In Ontario, the cougar still has
an "endangered" designation,
according to the Ministry of Nat-
ural Resources.
The cougar (also known as a
mountain lion or puma) is rarely
seen by humans, and is Cana-
da's largest wildcat. It has a long
black -tipped tale and black
markings on the ears a muzzle.

dent during the Christ-
