Fourth Annual Clinton Minor Baseball Camp sees special guest and big turnout

For a small town, Clinton
Minor Baseball's two day
baseball camp consistently
gets huge turnout. This was
evident once again on July 11
and 12 as 133 kids came out
to learn about the popular
sport.
"It's no problem filling the
camp," said organizer Jeff
Ryan. "It fills up quick"
This year, the camp had a
very important guest - Bret
Saberhagen, former MLB
pitcher. Saberhagen played
baseball from 1984 - 2001
and won the World Series in
1985 with the Kansas City
Royals. He won the Ameri-
can League Cy Young Award
twice as well as a number of
other awards. Saberhagen
said coming to Clinton is his
pleasure; this camp is his
first visit to the area.
"I was very ecstatic to hear
that not being a Blue Jay
player, they wanted me to
come out," said Saberhagen.
Also present was Mark
Brew and Scott Bullett. Brew is
a renowned college coach at
Lee University in Tennessee,
and Scott Bullet has a baseball
academy in Welland. They
both played major league
baseball at one point; it is
Brew's second year helping
with the camp and Bullett's
third year.
Saberhagen wasn't
involved too much in the
planning of the camp, but
was brought in to teach
workshops on throwing,

"It's been great," he said.
"There's been a lot of great
questions asked by the kids,
and it's great to see a bunch
of girls out here partaking in
it too. I'm really blown away
by the turnout when it's not
a big metropolitan area [...]
it's pretty impressive."
Saberhagen got in contact
with the camp through Fran-
cine Birken who owns Dis-
tinctive Foto Imaging and rep-
resents various celebrities.
Birken knew about the base-
ball camp as she is in touch
with MP Ben Lobb, who has
been instrumental in helping
organize the camp since it
started. Birken saw Saber-
hagen at an event and told
him about the camp;
through word of mouth and
connections, Saberhagen
was brought to Clinton.
