Valerie Gillies Clinton News Record After record-breaking tempera- tures throughout much of Decem- ber and the beginning of January, winter weather made its appear- ance all of a sudden throughout most of Southern Ontario. In Huron County, the snow began to arrive on a very rainy Sunday, January 10, which saw a rapid progression from heavy rain to freezing temperatures accom- panied by high winds that had the snow in the air blowing, causing near white-out conditions by mid- day. The extreme changeover occurred within the span of approximately one hour. The snow continued to mount over the next few days, as there was next to no ice coverage on Lake Huron, allowing for maxi- mum uptake of moisture as the wind crossed the water surface. Cold air from an Alberta clipper ensured that the moisture fell as snow. Many schools and activities were cancelled Monday through Wednesday as the snow contin- ued to come down and high winds caused blowing snow and slippery conditions on roadways. High- ways began to be closed on Tues- day due to poor to no visibility. Crews worked to try to keep area roads open, but the storm came too fast and too furious for the equipment to be able to keep up, causing treacherous driving con- ditions. Even more road closures occurred on Wednesday as the storm continued. The Huron County OPP were issuing warnings to motorists to "remain safe and avoid travel until the conditions improve and the roadways re -open," adding, "Driv- ing on a closed roadway can result in a $110 fine and 3 demerit points if convicted." Not only that, but automobile insurance companies are not obligated to cover damage incurred to vehicles that has occurred while being driven on a closed road. CONTINUED > PAGE 2
