Public Health Mailers Become smoke free and win
Dr. Janice Owen
Acting Medical Officer of
Health, Huron County
Happy New Year!
Hard to believe, aye? I am
not generally one to make
New Year's resolutions as I
find a year is too long to
wait before making impor-
tant life altering changes,
which New Year's resolu-
tions often are.
Sometimes it's not about
altering your life, but
appreciating and building
on what your life already
has, such as seniors keep-
ing their healthy and inde-
pendent lifestyles.
How does this relate to
our work? In public health,
we work to increase the
number of people living in
safe and supportive
environments. We also
work to reduce the number
and severity of injuries and
injury -related hospitaliza-
tions, disabilities, and
deaths. These two goals are
part of the Ontario Public
Health Standards.
When a person has a fall
they can be injured, and
that injury can be life alter-
ing, especially for older
adults. Similar to when you
go through puberty, when
you become an older adult
there are lots of new things
you need to learn to main-
tain the lifestyle you
cherish.
Here at the Health Unit,
we are one of many organi-
zations in Huron County
who strive to keep seniors
living independent and
active lives. We partner

through a group called
Stepping Out Safely where
we work to close the gaps
seniors may 'fall' through.
We also work with moti-
vated community groups
like Bayfield Home4Good
and Huron East Age -
Friendly to help make our
communities ones where
older adults can thrive.
Through Finding Balance
Ontario, we promote the
messages: Check Your
Medication, Speak Up
About Dizziness, Watch
Your Step and Keep Active!
Visit www.findingbalan-

We also attend senior
health fairs and speak to
seniors groups to give easy -
to -follow tips and ideas so
you can stay independent.
Be sure to tell your
healthcare provider if
you've had a fall, as it can
be a canary in a coal mine
about another issue. You
can take steps to prevent a
future fall!
Today's Tip: Most com-
munities in Huron County
have free exercise and fall
prevention classes for older
adults (55+ or even younger
if you have a chronic condi-
tion). Contact ONE CARE
Home & Community Ser-
vices to find a class near
you. Call 1-877-502-8277 or

Quitting smoking is one of
the most popular New Year's
resolutions. And it's not too
late to start - for the rest of
January there is a contest
that will help you stay moti-
vated so you can reach your
goal. And, you could end up
winning big!
For young adults and post-
secondary students of all
ages, Leave the Pack
Behind's wouldurather...
contest features two grand
prizes of $2,500 each. There
are categories for people
looking to quit, to cut back or
to stay smoke free. The con-
test is open to young adults
between the ages of 18 and
29 and post -secondary stu-
dents of all ages. Register by
January 24 at www.wouldu-
rather.ca.
"Quitting is a process, not
an event, and it's important
to get support," says Public
Health Promoter Sam
Docherty from the Huron
County Health Unit. "Not
only is joining the wouldu-
rather contest a good way to
make a quit attempt with
friends, family or peers for
the chance to win cash, it's
also effective in helping
smokers to quit"
The Health Unit wants to
support Huron County
smokers in their quit
attempts. For more informa-
tion on local quit smoking
supports and services avail-
able, please contact the
Huron County Health Unit at

OPP Festive RIDE Program targets
alcohol and drug impaired drivers
Nearly all Huron County drivers got the message
Special to Clinton News
Record
The annual Ontario Provin-
cial Police (OPP) Festive
Reduce Impaired Driving Eve-
rywhere (R.I.D.E) campaign
has officially come to an end
and the numbers in Huron
County show nearly all drivers
did in fact "get the mes-
sage" Festive R.I.D.E is a prov-
ince -wide campaign to create
visibility and increase aware-
ness about the dangers of driv-
ing while
rivingwhile under the influence of
alcohol and other drugs.
The highlyvisible campaign
started on November 23, 2015
and came to an end on January
2, 2016. During this years'
campaign, Huron County OPP
officers conducted a total of 245
R.I.D.E checkpoints. This
impressive total was the most of
any OPP Detachment in the
province. Although the exact
number ofvehicles that entered
these checkpoints is not known
it is safe to say thousands of
drivers entered into a Huron
County OPP R.I.D.E checkpoint
during the campaign.
Of the thousands of driver
contacts made, Huron OPP
officers charged a total of four
drivers with Impaired Driving/
Over 80 offences and another
four were served with warn -
range administrative driver's
license suspensions. Officers
also identified other Highway
Traffic Act, Compulsory Auto-
mobile Insurance Act, Con-
trolled Drugs and Substances
Act and Criminal Code
offences at these checkpoints.
Last year, Huron OPP
charged 19 drivers with
Impaired Driving/Over 80
offences and another three
were served with warn -range
administrative driver's license
suspensions.
Huron OPP is very encour-
aged to see the positive results
from this year's successful cam-
paign. Looking forward into
2016, Huron OPP officers will
continue with their regular
RI.D.E checkpoints in an effort
to keep our Huron County
roadways as safe as possible.
