The news from Londesborough
Brenda Radford
The Happy Gang Seniors
will hold their February meet-
ing at the Londesborough
United Church on Wednes-
day, February 23, beginning
with a pot luck meal at 12:30
p.m. New members are
welcome.
The village extends condo-
lences to Murray Govier on
the passing of his sister, Carol
Gross of Blyth.
Raymond and Hunter
Garvey are excited to wel-
come a new sister to their
family. Parents Ryan and Janet
Garvey are just trying to get
enough sleep as the house-
hold adjusts to the demands
of a new baby. Congratula-
tions! The Garvey family lives
in the Armstrong house so
that means one more pupil for
Hullett Central.
Villagers received word last
week that a former minister of
Londesborough United had
passed away. Rev. Stan
MacDonald ministered to this
faith community from 1970
through 1979. He was a very
well -loved pastor and many
have kept in touch with him
over the years. Following his
years preaching in Hensall
and Corunna, Rev. Stan
retired to London. He was
Minister Emeritus at Siloam
United Church for many years
and that is where his funeral
was held on Saturday, Febru-
ary 13. More than one minis-
ter who followed Stan in
the Londesborough pulpit
have mentioned they felt his
presence still.
I experienced some diffi-
culty purchasing Valentines
for my grandchildren this
year. Not just because they
have gotten older, but because
Valentine styles have
changed. I guess change is
inevitable in all areas of our
lives.
Since then I came across a
little poem that speaks to that
very thing titled "Special
Valentines':
"Valentines of long ago
were trimmed with silk and
lace,
Or featured hearts of velvet
in sentimental grace
Styles and shapes may vary
but Cupid's cards still say
Their universal language
the love lines of the day:'
As we are still in the month
of February, the month of
love, I have chosen to give you
background on another love
song. One of the most recog-
nized ballads in country
music was penned by Dolly
Parton nearly thirty-five years
ago. It was not intended as a
single recording but as a
'thank you' to Porter
Wagoner.
Porter recognized Dolly's
potential when no one else
seemed to be taking notice of
her talent. He featured her on
his syndicated TV show, The
Porter Wagoner Show. Then
the pair teamed up for several
hit duets and with Wagoner's

help, Dolly eventually emerged
as a solo country singer.
However in 1974, Dolly
realized it was time for her to
go out on her own. And the
rest, as they say, is history. She
did not want to hurt Wagoner
by this choice and wanted to
show him her appreciation for
being her mentor. That thank
you note/song she wrote for
him was "I Will Always Love
You': The song topped the
charts for both Dolly and later
pop singer, Whitney Houston.
And I recall Dolly sang that
song to Burt Reynolds in the
movie "Best Little Whore
House in Texas': In that case
the song was intended as a
love song.
Hullett Central Public
School and the SAC commit-
tee are gearing up for their
auction and carnival fund
raiser. They invite anyone pre-
pared to help to a meeting at
the school on Monday, Febru-
ary 29.
If your family has not yet
signed up for a photo session
for the latest church directory,
you might contact Laura Scott
or Catherine Allen to book a
time.
Londesborough United will
hold their annual meeting fol-
lowing the morning service
this Sunday, February
28. There will be a time for
lunch between the service
and the meeting so you are
asked to bring along finger
food to share. Plan to attend
and help chart the course of
church affairs for 2016.
Londesborough United
Church
Concern about the weather
and the condition of the roads
obviously affected church
attendance at Londesborough
United Church on Sunday,
February 14. The senior choir
was present and sang the
anthem, "Saving Grace"
During the children's time
at the front with Rev. Fletcher,
the love shared/expressed on
Valentine's Day through cards,
flowers and gifts was
discussed.
Terry reminded the chil-
dren that on more than one
occasion when Jesus was on
earth and in the company of
others, God spoke and
revealed to all His love for
Jesus. Christians should
remember God's example and
express our love to those
around us. We are special and
precious to God and we need
to share that love with the
whole world.
The message to the adults
was titled, "Being Tempted':
The supporting scripture was
Luke 4: 1-13, the account of
Christ's 40 days in the desert
being tempted by the devil.
The responsive psalm was
Psalm 91.
Temptation is a normal
part of life. It is important to
recognize it as such and learn
to deal with it. Christ's humil-
ity was tempted in the desert.
He needed to confront who
He was and where His life
was headed. The Devil
tempted Christ with power.
Life tempts us with power,
worldly goods, position, etc.
