But they recognized they would need to have him sing if fans would watch the movie. So the producers hired Ken Darby to pen a quartet of songs. Thinking it below his reputa- tion to write for a rock and roller, having just finished "The King and I", so he submitted the musical score under his wife's name. He may have regretted this as the movie title became the same as one of the songs, "Love Me Tender': Every teenager probably saw the movie at least once and the song itself sold millions of copies. Keeping love in mind, neigh- bours of the Laxton family who lost their home to fire on Saturday, Jan- uary 30, hope to have a drop-in 'day of support' for them at the Londes- borough Hall. Haward and Anna have two daughters and are expect- ing a third child any day. Conse- quently the date for the drop-in hasn't been set. Anna wishes to wait until the baby arrives. Currently the family is living in a farmhouse fur- ther down the 13th, the house where Haward's parents had lived at one time which was sitting empty. I will keep you up to date on this event. With snow in the forecast for sev- eral everal days this week one wonders if there will be snow for Snowarama on Saturday. Community folk can still drop by for breakfast beginning at 9 a.m. Hockley Valley Ski Resort closed their ski hills last week because of unsafe icy conditions on the slopes. Hullett Central pupils have resched- uled their trip for February 25. The in -school speech competi- tion will take place on February 23, beginning at 9 a.m. Community folk are invited to drop by that morning and enjoy. The senior volleyball team will take part in the district tournament at CHSS on Tuesday February 16, the day after Family Day. Londesborough UCW The Londesborough UCW acknowledged the dedication of one of their members at their Janu- ary 25 meeting. Dorothy Carter was presented with a Life Membership pin by the group for her service to the UCW. In her casual and informal man- ner Morag Watt spoke passionately about South Africa. Morag has fallen in love with the country and still marvels at how at home she feels when she spends her sum- mers there. She has visited this country six times in five years The country of South Africa was settled by the British and Dutch as a stop off port for the spice trade. That was the start of the multicultural aspect and the complex social system of the country. There continues to be a great deal of animosity between the various races. This diversity resulted in Apartheid which controlled the govemment for years. Morag feels Mandela, who was responsible for eliminating Apartheid, was atrue gift to the country and the world. Since the eradication of Apartheid there have been problems with the transition from a government con- trolled by whites to one controlled by blacks. Consequently there are many inequalities in employment and wages, housing, education and health care. The animosity between the groups is unfortunate considering howbeautifulthe country is and how extremely friendly the peoples are. The peoples of South Africa are filled with the joy of living every moment of everyday. CONTINUED > PAGE 20 M20 MAY MeCONVILLE OIVINI insurance brokers ltd.
