Huron Christian School News
Jennifer Branderhorst
Office Administrator,
Huron Christian School
January and February
means food drive at Huron
Christian School. Talking to
grade 5/6 students who are
coordinating this year's drive
revealed the following, "Our
food drive is a direct
response to what Jesus did -
feed the hungry. We've been
blessed so that we can be a
blessing to others", says
Kerina. "Our class is charting
how much each class is
donating, with an end goal of
1 ton of food raised by the
end of the drive ; added Lian.
Julia shared what she has
learned through this drive,
"22,000 children worldwide
die each day from poverty.
We want to help do some-
thing about that locally".
Monday after school
skating is another highlight
of the winter months. At the
end of the day, 2 bus loads of
students head over to the
arena for an hour of skating.
"Skating with my friends is
what I like the best", offers
Megan, while Sydney and
lace like the races. Abby and
Michael think playing tag
with their friends is the high-
light; Brooke mentioned that
the trip to the snack bar is
what she likes best about
each Monday afternoon.
Students in all grades are
learning skipping skills and
tricks during gym classes as
they prepare for the upcom-
ing Jump Rope for Heart
activity later in February.
Any sponsor money raised
will go to the Heart and
Stroke Foundation to help
combat heart disease.
Walks down the hallway at
any time of the day reveal
students practicing their writing
and public speaking or story
telling skills in preparation for
this year's speech competition
in mid-February.
Our theme assembly this
month, focusing on our
theme "Children of the Prom-
ise", saw our guest speaker,
Pastor Kevin from Exeter, lead
us in some reflections on the
gift of God's grace that makes
us His children. Each student
had a chance to respond to
that by writing what he/she
wanted to do for God out of
thankfulness for this gift. "I
want to work on putting oth-
ers before myself", shared
Nicola, while Ben, a grade 1
student, wants to pray for oth-
ers. Leigha wants to focus on
living her life for God, not for
herself.
If you drop in the school
over the noon hour, you will
see our students busy with a
variety of activities - Robotics
club, band club, chess club,
and the worship team that
helps lead singing at our
assemblies and a few local
worship services.
And finally, the last time
you heard from us, we were
anticipating snow days...
and once again, Huron
County winters have not dis-
appointed. At the time of
writing, we have experi-
enced 3 snow days, which is
way down from 7 at this time
last year. But, that doesn't
discourage Emma and Lau-
ren from hoping for more. "I
love it when it's snowing
hard at night and I kind of
anticipate a snow day. And
then the next day getting to
sleep in is a bonus", stated
Emma, while Lauren likes
snow days because she can
catch up on homework and
all kinds of other things.
