The news from Londesborough
Brenda Radford
Here are a few more of
those wacky definitions from
the Washington Post:
1] dopeler effect: the ten-
dency of stupid ideas to
seem smarter when they
come at you rapidly.
2] caterpallor: the colour
you turn after finding half a
grub in the fruit you are
eating.
3] beelzebug: Satan in the
form of a mosquito in your
bedroom at three in the
morning and cannot be cast
out.
4] arachnoleptic fit: the
frantic dance performed just
after you've accidentally
walked through a spider
web.
All that's still standing is
the chimney of the farm-
house on the 13th of Hullett
that was destroyed by fire in
mere minutes on Saturday
afternoon. Thankfully, no
one was home when the
fire broke out or the result
may have been more unfor-
tunate. As it is, the family of
Harold and Anna Laxton
are safe but have lost all
their belongings.
This young family may
need help from our
community.
Help with the blaze was
needed by Blyth from the
Clinton department.
Longtime residents of the
area will remember the
farm as having been home
to Bert and Dora Shob-
brook before their move to
the village. The family of
Richard Bergsma lived
there for a time as well and
raised goats on the
property.
On Shrove Tuesday, Feb-
ruary 9, the Londesborough
Lions Club invite you to

many varieties apparently,
between 5 and 7 p.m. at the
Community Hall. The meal
is by donation only.
Then before the grills get
really cold, the Lions Club
will be preparing breakfast
on Saturday, February 13.
They will be cooking for par-
ticipants in the Annual
Easter Seals Snowarama and
community folk who wish to
contribute to the cause. Par-
ticipants for the snowmobile
run, or whatever activity is
planned in the event there is
no snow, will register at the
Londesborough Hall.
As I put this space
together it is pouring rain
and the snow is shrinking.
Children at Hullett Central
did have a great day tubing
last Thursday at River Valley
Tubing near St. Marys. It
remains to be seen whether
this week's ski trip will actu-
ally happen. And I
understand stories and
speeches are being agonized
over.
Londesborough
United Church
Londesborough United
Church is interested in doing
an updated photo directory
for our congregation, and
that of Knox United in
Auburn. If your family would
like to participate, please
sign the sheet in the narthex
before February 28. Dates for
participating will be
arranged later.
The Outreach Committee
has chosen Family Day, Feb-
ruary 15, as the cutting day
for the Sole Hope Project.
The cost of supplying a pair
of shoes for Ugandans is $10
and this is also a way for
congregants to help. In
Uganda the money is used
thus, $3 to a native tailor, $3
to pay the shoemaker, $2 for
incidental supplies and $2 to
ship the cut denim to
Uganda.
Why are they needing
these 'soles'? Jiggers are sand
fleas who attach themselves
to the bare feet of Ugandans
to lay their hundreds of eggs.
The initial bite is not painful
but over a couple of weeks as
the jigger feeds off the
human blood a blister forms
which does cause much
pain. This egg sac continues
growing, damaging feet and
making it difficult and pain-
ful to walk. Eventually walk-
ing is impossible. The denim
shoes protect the feet and
may be the only shoes an
Ugandan owns.
Consider helping with
this project. Cutting will be
worked on that day
between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
If you stay over the lunch
hour, the committee will
feed you.
As noted previously, vol-
unteers have been closet
and cupboard cleaning at
Londesborough United.
Consequently the Trustees
have a number of items for
sale, 32 to be exact. The list
contains a wide variety of
items from wooden chairs
in two sizes, plywood tables
of two styles, junior choir
gowns, an antique settee
and matching chair, an
organ bench, set of quilt
stands and other miscella-
neous items. A complete
list was included in the Jan-
uary 31 order of service.
The church is open on
Wednesday and Thursday
mornings if you wish to
view the articles. Signed
and sealed bids must be
dropped in the box pro-
vided by February 7. Suc-
cessful bidders will be
notified.
