Valerie Gillies Clinton News Record A Clinton tradition continues as Robert Brown sculpted and painted his snowy renditions of the logos of the contender teams for the 2016 Super Bowl. This year it is the Arizona Cardinals, New England Patriots, Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos. Brown has been sculpting the NFL sculptures to mark the pro- gress of the teams almost every year for approximately 30 years. It took him approximately 25 hours to complete the four on display this year. Those who know Brown know that these sculptures are not just created and left static in front of his home at 32 Rattenbury Street. The NFL progress is tracked and the sculptures are rearranged to always place the losing teams of the most recent games on the left as you face the house and the win- ners on the right. Brown got his start in snow sculpting by being the mudder, the one who brings the buckets of water and snow to the actual art- ist, for a good friend of his. As his friend is now a long way away, Brown does his own sculpting, although he qualifies it saying, "My friend is the real artist. What I do is more of a cartoon take -off. If my friend were doing it, the pan- ther would look lifelike." Although there has been a mild spell since these four sculptures were built, causing some deterio- ration, Brown advises that they are rebuilt as the season progresses. "The Bronco's and Panther's sculptures will be rebuilt up big- ger and better for the Super Bowl on February 7." Brown admits that he absolutely loves playing in the snow. He would be thrilled to find like-minded peo- ple who would like to join him in his hobby. Currently he has a goal of finding up to six more people to build some snow art in the old Sal- vation Army store lot beside Dollar Haven in Clinton. "With that many people we could get an amazing display done overnight to surprise the people going by the next day." Of course, the weather and snow quality are crucial to quality snow sculpting. To accomplish the over- night transformation would require keeping track of conditions to pick the perfect night to do it. Brown has other projects on the go and in his mind for throughout the area. If you are interested in joining him, he can be reached at 226-420-2080.
