Their creations of hats and mittens go to a good cause - people who are homeless and need extra warmth in the win- ter. The kids are also making sleeping mats out of old milk bags. In the past, they have donated their items to the Unity Project in London, Homeless Connect in Toronto and to homeless veterans through a contact at the legion. The group at Huron Centen- nial calls themselves the "Mats and Hats Group': The tradition started last year initiated by Tamara Croker, an EA at the school, who did a presentation to the kids about how her church, Berea Lutheran Church in Goderich, was knitting and making sleep- ing mats for the homeless. The kids were interested in doing the projects themselves. So, the school reached out to a grant for funding, and received $2500 for supplies from a grant through Speak Up. They bought yarn and looms which they use instead of nee- dles to make the items. They have also received donations of yarn and supplies as well as milk bags. This year, the Mats and Hats Group received funding from a different place - they were awarded $500 from the Maple Leaf Chapter of the IODE in Goderich. The IODE grants money to groups that focus on women, children, education and preservation of history. So far this year our group has made 164 hats and 22 pairs of mittens, and they will continue knitting throughout the school year. Last year, they made 400 hats and 37 sleeping mats.
