Fletcher Lit the second Advent candle that morning, the candle of peace. The senior choir shared the hymn/anthem "Gentle Mary Laid Her Baby" with the congregation. Rev. Terry told the children who gathered at the front of the sanctuary that the Chris- tian church is now in the period of Advent which means a time of waiting for something special to happen. It is a time of excitement and of sharing the Christmas story. Jesus is called 'the light of the world: Early Christians wanted a way to show others that that light is coming and adopted the practice of light- ing candles during Advent. Nowadays people use lots of electric lights during the Christmas season to chase away the dark and fill the world with warmth and antic- ipation. These lighted decora- tions show everyone what our happiness looks like. "Dreaming" was the title of the message to the adults. The supporting new testament scripture passage was Matt 1: 18-25. These verses are an account of the angel reassur- ing Joseph in a dream that he should not fear to take Mary as his wife. In Joseph's time, the Jews were a prideful lot yet Joseph humbled himself to do as God commanded to accept Mary as his wife. There are many accounts in the Bible of God speaking to people through dreams. And everyone dreams - four or more times a night and some- times during quiet moments of wakefulness. Although most dreams are not remem- bered, nothing has ever been done that wasn't dreamed about first. In 1865, a dream about a snake gave the answer to the inventor of plastic of how to deal with the component ben- zene. A dream about being attacked gave the answer to the inventor of the sewing machine in 1845 of how to get the thread incorporated. Seems the soldier's spears had a hole in the end. Ergo the machine's needle with an eye. Frederick Banting came to an important part of his insulin discovery through a dream. These three and countless more inventions have bene- fited the whole world. Joseph's decision following the appear- ance of an angel in his dream shaped the whole Christian world. Rev. Fletcher encour- aged everyone to be open to hearing the voice of God in dreams and quiet times. An item in the morning's order of service caught my attention. It is from = TV show, "The X Files; of which I am a fan: "Dreams are answers to questions we haven't yet figured how to ask" The Outreach Committee invite everyone to their Alz- heimer Coffee Break follow- ing the morning service on Dec. 11. A coffee and a light snack are offered for a donation to this cause. At the recent board meet- ing, it was decided not to have a service on Christmas Day.
