This effort gave birth to the Alzhei- mer Society of Huron County. The society's main office is in Clinton, however they also have satellite offices in Wingham and Hensall. An estimated 1200 people in Huron County have Alz- heimer's disease. Last year, the Alzheimer Society had 465 registered clients which includes individuals with the disease and caregivers. Above that, the society served over 2000 people in educational sessions with members of the public, pro- fessional caregivers and more. "In a nutshell we support persons with dementia and their care partners," said Executive Director Cathy Rit- sema. "We do that through many way such as education, one on one sup- port, group support and social recreation programs:' Like many non -profits, they heavily depend on vol- unteers. They have only 8 staff, but they have around 100 volunteers who help in the office and with programs. They have four major fun- draisers throughout the year - an Alzheimer's Walk in the spring, Coffee Break from September to December, a spooky run in October and an annual gala auction. Their upcoming fundraiser is Coffee Break which starts in September. This event invites members of the community, clubs, organizations, families, etc. to host a coffee break at their home or business, and their friends and families who are invited are encouraged to bring a donation for the Alz- heimer's Society. It's basically a get together, but those invited may bring a contribu- tion to the society. The Alzheimer Society of Huron County is one of 31 Alzheimer's societies in Ontario; all these various groups work in collaboration with each other.
