This year the competition was a little different from the previous years, said Brett Lee, President & Gen- eral Manager for Walton Raceway. "We changed everything. We started from scratch, and I'm pretty happy about that," stated Lee after the winners left the podium. "We took on our own program and created our own brand." To intensify the last 10 minutes of the race which some people have been calling the "sleeper," they cut the MX1 and MX2 motos down to 20 minutes; in doing so, this leads to an all out sprint to the finish line. The top 18 from each moto went forward to the 25 minutes plus -2 lap Pro Super -Final. This is when the racers had one chance to see if they can hold the sword and be the King of Walton. Breaking away from the national series, Walton Raceway now has it's own independent event. To spread their wings in other ventures to dignify their sovereignty, they were able to sign a deal with The Sports Network (TSN), which meant it was streamed live. The weekend came with a list of events. One of the crowd favourites had to be the concert of Cold Creek County and Jordan McIn- tosh which was postponed after Jordan McIntosh fin- ished because of heavy thunder and rain. After a couple hours, the show rocked back up around 11 p.m. last Saturday. Lee considered the whole event to be a success, but the solid turnout of about 730-740 amateurs compet- ing is what impressed him the most. After the concert and all the amateur races were done, the crowd gathered to watch the National Open pro to see who would be victorious at the Superfinal and win the record purse of $30,000. After a tough fight, Kaven Benoit rode out as the 2016 champion, making him the King of Walton. "Right now he's one of the top Canadian riders, and he's incredibly fit," said Lee. Lee went on to say that a big part of Benoit's success is his trainer, numerous - time national champion Photo courtesy of Shaun Gregory Postmedia Network The top three of the Pro Super -Final of the Canadian Grand National Championship in Walton last Sunday. To the left in third place is Joey Crown, in the middle is the winner, Kaven Benoit, and in second place is Brad Nauditt. Jean Sebastien Roy. Joey Crown, 17, from Michigan came in third place and he said the most difficult part of the race was the starting gate. "Kaven had a good start; I was back buried about 10th place," said Crown. "He rides great, don't get me wrong. I thought if I would have had a better start, I would have been able to bang bars with him a little better." your1ij moments.ca For Obituaries call: 1-877-750-5054 Fax: 1-866-485-8461 e-mail: obituaries@yourlifemoments.ca All other moments call: 1-888-786-7821 Fax: 1-866-757-0227 e-mail: milestones.sun@yourlifemoments.ca Marking your milestones.
