Goderich was hopping on August
19-21 as the community celebrated
something close to their hearts - salt.
More specifically, the discovery of salt
In 1866, a crew that was searching for
oil stumbled upon a huge salt deposit
300 m underground. It was the first salt
bed discover in North America. Today,
it is the largest underground salt mine
in the world, extending five kilometers

below Lake Huron. The mine itself is
7km2 which is about the size of the
town of Goderich.
The event was put on by the Town of
Goderich and was co-sponsored by
Sifto.
It featured events throughout the
weekend, beginning with opening cer-
emonies and a magic show by Mike
D'Urzo. Events took place at various
locations around town and included
salt mine bus tours, geocashing and
displays, a "salt trail" downtown, music,
food and more.

Driver Phil Hudon captured a pair of
Grassroots divisions at Clinton Raceway
on Sunday afternoon, guiding three-
year-old trotting geldings Tough Get
Going and Magic Missions to victory on
the half -mile oval's 70th anniversary
card.
In addition to the five Grassroots
divisions, Clinton Raceway marked
its 70th anniversary with a cake and
a commemorative race. Two original
members of the Clinton Turf Club, Bruce
Dupee and Harold (Hoot) Gibbings, were
on hand to present an anniversary cooler
to Race 6 winner Toureg Seelster and his
connections exactly 70 years to the day
after harness racing first made its debut
in Clinton.
Lorne House of Ingersoll guided
Toureg Seelster to the 2:00 victory for
trainer Peter Brickman and owner Erin
Swainson Brickman of Sebringville, ON.
Also participating in the 70th anniversary
celebrations were members of the
Huron Heat Female Hockey Association.
Through a 50/50 draw, bake sale and
Pork Chop BBQ the organization was
able to raise just over $4,600 for team
jerseys for their first season.
Two Sundays remain on Clinton
Raceway's 2016 schedule and the
Ontario Sires Stakes will help wrap
things up at the half -mile oval onSept.
