Londesborough

Special to the News Record
Our area finally received
rain. In twenty-four hours,
we received just short of
three inches. In that same
twenty-four hours, I swear
the leaves on the corn stalks
opened up and collectively
said "AH". The whole field
truly looks less parched.
And the grass seemed to
green up right before our
eyes.
Just a little warning
regarding the flow of traffic
over the bridge at the edge of
the village; The lights seem
to be on a short timer, mean-
ing about only four cars get
to go on green. Unfortu-
nately I have witnessed sev-
eral vehicles run the red light
so be on your guard when
waiting for traffic there.
I see some work has been
done eradicating the weeds
around the Londesborough
sign on Highway 4 by the
school yard. Thanks to who-
ever did the work. It is a great
improvement.
Last Wednesday evening
the Blyth Fire Department
raced through the village. A

LONDESBOROUGH
UNITED CHURCH
Dealing with the 'storms
and struggles' that are inevi-
table in everyone's life was
the message of the service at
Londesborough United
church on Sunday, August
14.
The responsive psalm was
Psalm 104. The New Testa-
ment scripture passage cho-
sen by Rev. Fletcher was
Matthew 14: 22-33. These
verses recount the night a
storm assailed the boat the
disciples were on. In the
morning Jesus came to them
by walking on the water.
Peter, who attempted to walk
to Jesus, had to be helped.
His faith had faltered when
the wind arose.
Rev. Fletcher noted that
everyone has experienced
storms in their life, storms
that can come quickly and
knock a person off their feet
or others that affect our lives
for a long time. We can be
sideswept and thrown off
course by these storms;
seeming more than we can
handle.
Rev. Fletcher posed the
question, "How do we han-
dle the storms of life? Do we
back away or look around for
ways to survive?" Storms and
struggles are part of life; it is
our response to them that
matters. His hope is that we
respond with bravery and
faith in God, recognizing He
will bring calm and peace to
our lives.
Terry recounted the story
of Grace Darling. Grace
became a heroine in her
early 20s in Victorian times.
Grace lived with her father
on a Northumberland
Island. One evening in 1838,
a steamship ran aground
and broke up on a neigh-
bouring rocky island. She felt
it was her responsibility to
save the survivors. She and
her father launched their 21
foot rowing boat and set out
in the storm. While her
father helped folk aboard,
Grace kept the boat secure
despite the waves.
She was not content to let
the storm claim lives.
The Minute for Missions
included in the order of ser-
vice that day was an update
on one of the affects of the
2004 tsunami, a time of
struggle for the people
affected.
Today the way for the fish-
ermen of Kari Kattu Kuppum
fishing village to get to the
sea with their fishing equip-
ment has been blocked by a
large wall built by a private
company that wants to build
on the prime coast land.
Consequently the village has
only 50 families living there
now. Monies donated to the
UC Mission and Service
Fund is helping the villagers
to plead their case to the
Human Rights Advocacy and
Research Foundation.
Marsha Szusz offered
piano accompaniment for
the morning service.
