When crops are off and weather cools, plant trees
Fall is good time to plant windbreaks or other projects
to preserve topsoil, buffer watercourses, improve forest
conditions, says Forestry and Stewardship Specialist
There are several weeks of
summer left but as we pro-
gress through the second
half of the season, people
can look towards autumn
and fall tree planting. Local
landowners order trees
through spring and fall tree
order programs and Ausable
Bayfield Conservation staff
members say the fall tree
order form is now online
at abca.on.ca. Property own-
ers ordering trees may mail
or fax orders by September
16, 2016 or place orders
accompanied by payment
until September 30, 2016.
Local landowners pur-
chased more than 50,000
trees this spring (2016)
through the Ausable Bayfield
Conservation Authority
(ABCA) tree program. The
fall program is smaller than
the spring one, but autumn
is a good time to order trees
and think ahead to spring.
"Fall is a great time to
plant potted deciduous trees
as well as ball and burlap
evergreens," said Ian Jean,
ABCA Forestry and Land
Stewardship Specialist. "We
have two -foot balled and
burlap Spruce and Cedar
that are ideal to create shel-
terbelts and windbreaks on
fields and farms."
Autumn is still weeks away
but some forward -thinking
residents are already think-
ing of spring planting as well.
Jean advises those who are
thinking of planting in the
spring of 2017 to begin site
preparation in September
and October of this year.
"Call us and we can help
with planting plans, site
preparation, forest manage-
ment plans, and erosion
control advice," he said.
"When people start to plan
now it gives time to get cost -
share funding in place for
next spring and to do proper
site assessment."
The fall tree order program
provides trees for sale to
landowners for windbreaks,
watercourse buffers, and
other planting projects.
Trees are purchased through
this program for afforesta-
tion, windbreaks, and other
stewardship projects, not for
landscaping. Tree species
offered for sale through the
fall program are: White
Cedar, Norway Spruce,
White Spruce, Blue Spruce,
White Pine, Silver Maple,
Sugar Maple, Red Oak, Bur
Oak and Tulip Tree.
The watershed is dry at the
moment, but in most areas
the spring planted seedlings

T
are doing surprisingly well.
Some late -summer and
early -autumn rains would be
very helpful but watering
young trees is also very
important, according to
Jean.
"In this weather trees would
like at least an inch of rain
equivalent per week," he said.
A full five -gallon pail pro-
vides almost an inch of water
spread over a square yard.
Transplanted trees need at
least that much water per
week, and the larger the trans-
plant, the more water is
required. The forestry and
stewardship specialist expects
larger transplants and even
established trees will begin to
show signs of drought stress
this year.
"I am seeing early leaf drop
already in many areas," he
said. "It's a response to a lack
of water that is similar to your
lawn grass turning brown:'
Some larger transplants may
completely defoliate, but Jean
suggests trees may still sur-
vive. "To check if your tree is
alive, scrape back some bark
on the smaller branches," he
said. "If it's green underneath,
the tree is still alive and it
should be fine next year!'
Jean advises to keep water-
ing such trees once per week
until regular rains return.
Grants may cover a portion
of the cost of some tree plant-
ing projects.
"The funding is 50 per cent
in a lot of cases, but in some
areas you may reach up to 100
per cent cost recovery," Jean
said.
He encourages local land-
owners to call the Ausable
Bayfield Conservation office
at 519-235-2610 or toll-
free 1-888-286-2610 to find
out about grant programs
that may be available to help
with the cost of planting
farm windbreaks, water-
course buffers, land retire-
ment, and other stewardship
projects.
For instance, there is cost -
share funding for establish-
ing field windbreaks in
Huron County through the

Huron Clean Water Project.
Approved windbreaks or
watercourse buffers may
receive up to 50 per cent
funding for the cost of trees
and planting. There is also
cost -share funding to farm
businesses, for planting trees
in the watershed, from the
Species at Risk Farm Incen-
tive Program (SARFIP). Up
to 50 per cent funding is
available for eligible pro-
jects, said Jean. (Farms must
have a 3rd or 4th edition
Environmental Farm Plan to
qualify for that grant pro-
gram, which is administered
by the Ontario Soil and Crop
Improvement Association).

tree orders, or to order trees,
visit abca.on.ca. Type `trees'
into the search box at the top
of the home page. Then press
'enter' and the 'order trees'
page should be one of the top
choices. The page can also be
