CaII 911 Approximately 50 per cent of people who think they're having a stroke are making a grave mistake by driving themselves, or have someone else drive them, to the nearest emergency department instead of calling 911 - a choice that could impact their outcomes. This means that of the approximately 1,500 people admitted each year with stroke in the South West Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) area, 750 are uninten- tionally putting their opportu- nities for recovery at risk. A new video released today reinforces the impor- tance of calling 911 when signs of stroke emerge. To view the video go to https:// youtu.be/NVCmKW5Y1HQ. Stroke patients and people at risk of stroke achieve the best outcomes if they are treated by practitioners with stroke expertise and experi- ence. By calling 911, resi- dents of the South West LHIN who experience a stroke will be assessed by paramedics and taken to a designated stroke centre so they can receive specialized Wednesday, August 17, 2016 • News Record 11 care. "With stroke, every minute counts to prevent further brain damage," explains Dr. Catherine Barry, General Internist. "That's why it's so important to save time by call- ing 911, so the paramedics can quickly take you to the right place for the right care." "No matter where you live, just call 911, and leave it up to the highly trained paramedics to get you to the nearest centre with stroke expertise;" says Jeff Horseman, Acting Chief Huron County Paramedic Services. The front door is protected by a porch, always welcome in bad weather, and leads into a spacious foyer. A coat closet is ahead and to the left, opposite the stairway to the basement. To the right are two display cases, ideal for collectibles. Directly ahead, through a squared archway, the great room features a fireplace and sliding doors to the partly - covered sundeck. The dining area is tucked into a niche with large windows that also look out to the sundeck. The kitchen is separated from the dining area and great room by a work island.
