Go jump in the lake,
but cool off? Dicey

Sure, head to the beach to cool off.
Just don't expect it to be nature's big
refrigerator.
As the region endures another swel-
tering week, the Great Lakes also are
sweating — with surface temperatures
on Lake Erie, for example, touching an
average 25 C.
That's far warmer than in the chill
summer of 2014.
"That was a long winter. Ice cover
persisted and then it was a cool and
more cloudy summer," said George
Leshkevich, a scientist with Great Lakes
Environmental Research Laboratory in
Ann Arbor, Mich.
Near shore, beach water is testing as
warm as 27 C, a few degrees cooler than
the air temperature.
Refreshing, yes — cool, no.
Water temperatures bounce up or
down each year but it takes a lot of solar

energy to warm that much water,
Leshkevich noted.
Numbers this year are similar to
those of 2012, when lack of cloud and
high heat pushed temperatures up
almost to 1994 levels.
Temperature readings are made
through satellite readings and a series
of in -water buoys.
Unlike other years, though, the
warmth has not fuelled algae blooms in
Lake Erie.
A new report from the National Oce-
anic and Atmospheric Administration
says lack of rain has kept harmful phos-
phorus from leaching into rivers lead-
ing to the lakes. That in turn has kept
algae in check.

7 CRASHES, 8 LIVES
LOST LAST WEEK
(HURON COUNTY, ON) – The West Region OPP High-
way Safety Division is pleading with drivers to change
their driving behaviour immediately, following a
deadly week on the roads.
OPP investigated 7 collisions in which 8 people died
on area roads plus another 4 serious collisions involv-
ing life-threatening injuries for 5 people.
The most recent death reported late Sunday even-
ing in Essex County occurred when a motorcycle
driver collided with three pedestrians; killing one
and seriously injuring another.
"Our message is back to the basics...don't drink
and drive, slow down, fasten your seat belt and
pay attention! If you're not committed to pay
total attention to the road then don't get behind
the wheel. Driver accountability has to go beyond
the fear of getting a ticket from police; it has to
become a conscious decision and effort made
for the safety of all roadway users. Until we get
back to the basics, needless serious injury and
death will be the logical consequence, regardless
of police enforcement efforts," said OPP Traffic
Inspector Lisa Anderson.
OPP officers will continue directed patrols in high
collision areas, targeted enforcement in identified
areas as well as educational campaigns targeting
road safety. The OPP remain, and always will be,
vigilant in trying to reduce injury and death on area
roadways.
