Construction began on
the Huron County Afghan-
istan Community Monu-
ment last week, more than
a year and a half after the
Legion began its mission
to bring it to the county.
Back in December 2014,
Royal Canadian Legion
Branch 109 (Goderich)
spearheaded Huron Coun-
ty's application to receive
a LAV III (light armoured
vehicle) to be used to hon-
our of our 158 fallen and
as a tribute to the more
than 40,000 Canadian
Forces members who
served. The application
was formally approved in
February 2016, making
Huron County, at the time,
only the third community
in Canada to receive a
monument.
The Goderich Legion
partnered with other
Legion Branches and Aux-
iliaries to fundraise, but
were also seeking commu-
nity partners to help real-
ize its goal of an Ontario
West Coast Afghanistan
Memorial.
In March, Huron County
became a major partner

by approving the location
of the monument at the
Huron County Museum
and by providing the engi-
neering and construction
expertise to prepare the
site for the monument.
The Legion also received
generous offers of assis-
tance from the private
sector to assist with the
transportation and instal-
lation of the monument
on the display site.
The Huron County
Museum was selected as a
perfect location as it met all
the conditions required for
approval of the application;
a prominent location
within Huron County; a
link to youth and remem-
brance; and accessible to
the general public.
In addition, the monu-
ment will complement
