His hard work finally paid off this Saturday when he received his coveted black belt. Bell, who is going into grade 12 at C.H.S.S. next year, originally started doing karate as a confidence booster after experiencing bullying as a kid. He kept it up to continue increasing his confidence as well as stay in shape, and he has stayed dedicated to the sport. He originally took martial arts in Clinton with a company that operated out of Clinton Public School. However he was only there for two years before it closed down; for the past nine years after that, he has been practicing with a group out of Holmesville Community Centre called Tyndall's Karate School. The belt colours in progression are white, yellow, orange, green, blue, second kyu brown, first kyu brown and black. There are actually 10 levels of black belts, but it takes decades to achieve the top levels of the belt. "You're 60 or 70 when get that," laughed Bell. Bell's black belt grading took place on Saturday the 13th at the Holmesville Community Centre, and the standards were intense. 20 judges who also have their black belt came to judge Bell from as far as Goderich and London. Bell had to demonstrate punches, use of specific weapons, katas, self -defences and grounding. The judging aspect of the day went from 10 a.m. until noon. After that, Bell was deemed worthy of what he had worked for, and had his black belt ceremony from 2:30 to 4 p.m. As for the future, Bell is off to univer- sity after grade 12, and will likely put his karate on hold. However he has achieved what he has been working for - his black belt. if it's local, it's here Contributed photo Ron Tyndall, 5th Dan, head instructor with Nick Bell. Clinton Public Hospital getting lots of help with flood clean up Justine Alkema Clinton News Record Clean up at the Clinton Public Hospital is ongoing after the "major basement flood" on July 31, according to a press release sent out at the time. The cause of the flood is still under review, though it was raining quite hard that day. However clean-up is going efficiently with many people helping out. The water itself is cleaned up, but currently they are managing mold remediation which is not uncommon after a flood when moisture gets into drywall. They also have to replace the floor in three or four of the areas affected. The biggest interruption to the public as a result of this is they will not be resuming the outpatient lab services for a minimum of several weeks. "We had tremendous help from our staff and other sites' help," said Vice President Quality and Clini- cal Services Mary Cardinal. "The place was just a hive of activity getting things resitu- ated [...] It was a well oiled machine." qr Boden Lyons Casey Neutel Brayden Haderlein Logan Fallone Adiyah Zondervan Ashlyn Anne Edwards Kaitlyn Carter Elise Brady Carter Buffinga Ryden Livermore Kai Claussen Aleah Cook July 28 July 30 Aug. 1 Aug. 2 Aug. 2 Aug. 4 Aug. 4 Aug. 8 Aug. 18 Aug. 21 Aug. 22 Aug. 23 If you wish to have your childs name & birthdate in the Birthday Club for ages 1-12, please call the office, it's free. 519-482-3443 Hey Kids!
