Contributed photo Wednesday, August 10, 2016 • News Record 13 "Transfiguration" exhibition at Blyth Gallery Beginning on August 12, a for- mer FE Madill student will be the featured artist at the Blyth Festival Art Gallery. Montina Hussey is a BFA graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design and recently completed her studies in Florence, Italy on a Study Abroad Program. The exhibition, titled "Trans- figuration: a Case Study on Epi- genetic Memory", is sure to intrigue visitors to the gallery. Epigenetic memory is defined as a set of modifications to DNA that does not alter its sequence and have been inherited from the cell from which it descends. Such modifications can alter gene expression and therefore the properties and behaviour of the cell. In human terms, it sug- gests that events in the lives of one's ancestors may influence the lives of descendants, even though they are not conscious of those past events. "Last summer I came across archives of photographs and film stills of my grandparents from the 1920s. As I stared into the pale imagery mauled by the decades, I suffered a pang of nostalgia for a time I never expe- rienced," said the artist. The photographs triggered painful memories from her own life experiences and Hussey hopes to transform them into healing through her paintings. Her subjects include alcoholism, depression, anxiety and the past and present trauma of our First Nations. The public can view Montina Hussey's challenging exhibition in the Bainton Gallery, Blyth Memo- rial Hall, from August 12 to Sep- tember 3. "Transfiguration: A Case Study on Epigenetic Memory" is pre- sented by the Blyth Festival Art Gallery. It is curated by Greg Sher- wood and sponsored by Joan Per- rie. The gallery is located next to the Blyth Festival box office and is open during box office hours. Admission is free.
