Over 150 people attended last year's smoke-free outdoor movie night which was held in Goderich. This
year's outdoor movie will be held in Seaforth on August 13.
Free Outdoor Movie Night
Huron County, ON - Family
fun is back in the form of a free
movie night at Victoria Park in
Seaforth on August 13. Families
are invited to come out and
watch Zootopia, an animated
children's movie about a crime
fighting rabbit.
The movie is part of atobacco-
free event which includes activi-
ties such as button making, a
trivia wheel, and promotion of
tobacco -free living, physical
activity and the benefits of drink-
ing
rinking water. Snacks will be availa-
ble for purchase from local ven-
dors, and there will be a water
re -fill station, so please bring
your water bottles as well.
Activities will begin at 7 p.m.
followed by a local youth band
who will provide entertainment
before the movie begins at dusk
Please bring lawn chairs and
blankets to sit on.
Organizers say this family-
oriented event brings attention
to the role of media messaging
and tobacco use.
"Since most movies with
smoking are rated for kids and
teens they can have a big influ-
ence on kids to start smoking,"
says Public Health Promoter
Samantha Docherty from the
Huron County Health Unit.
"This helps the tobacco indus-
try recruit a new generation of
customers:'
Youth volunteers will also be
addressing the issue of smok-
ing in movies rated for children
and youth at the event.
The free movie will take
place rain or shine. The rain
location is the Seaforth and
District Community Centre,
located at 122, Duke St.,
Seaforth.
The event is hosted by the
Huron County Health Unit, in
partnership with the Munici-
pality of Huron East, Healthy
Kids Community Challenge
and the Huron East/ Seaforth
Development Community
Trust.

More than pencils and crayons
The Huron County Back Pack Program is
well underway in its preparation to ensure
that each school child can start the new
school year with a big smile. Approximately,
175 children are already registered to
receive new back packs filled with school
supplies for the start of the school year. The
Salvation Army in Goderich, Clinton and
Wingham are busily collecting donations
for this backpack program that will benefit
more than 300 low-income children and
families as they prepare for the start of the
schoolyeat:
"This is my second year using the pro-
gram," says Deanna, grandmother of six-
year-old Brendon. "I'm on a fixed income
and the gift of a new backpack takes a lot of
financial stress from me. It also means that
Brendon will start the school year on the
same foot as the other kids."
Giving a backpack to a family in need is
more than about pencils and crayons; it's
about providing peace of mind for parents
or caregivers who may be struggling to
make ends meet that their children can
have a positive start to the new school year.

Regardless of their families financial situa-
tion every child should have the opportu-
nityto start the schoolyearwith their head
held high.
"Each child will receive, at the very least,
a backpack," said Shannon Daniels, family
services co-ordinator with The Salvation
Army. "Our hope is that each child will also
receive a lunch bag, a pencil case, rulers
and other practical school supplies. We
attempt to fill every backpackwith supplies
that are age and gender appropriate'
Shannon Daniels comments that regis-
tration continues until August 17, with
donations of school supplies being
accepted until August 18. Families wanting
to register their children to receive a back-
pack
ackpack can contact anyone of the three Salva-
tion Army Community and Family Services
offices. The most needed items are new
backpacks, lunch bags, pencil crayons and
felt markers.
"Backpacks cost a minimum of $40;" says
Deanna. 'And that's without any school
supplies. The bottom line is that without
The Huron County Back Pack Program I'd
have to cutback on something else and that
would likely be clothes. I'm glad I don't
have to make that choice.'
There will be a lot of happy children on
the first day of school thanks to Huron
County's Back Pack Program.
