GH Garratt's talent carries one of the biggest
local stories in 'The Last Donnelly Standing'

There are the stories we've
heard, the stories we think
we know, and then there's
what really happened.
The Blyth Festival's final
show of its 42nd season,
The Last Donnelly Standing,
takes a unique approach to
telling the story of the Rob-
ert Donnelly - one of the
seven infamous Donnelly
brothers.
Gil Garratt plays Donnelly
as the only cast member in
the retelling of the feud that
raged in Lucan Biddulph in
the late 19th century that
came to an end with the
murder of five members of
the Donnelly family. No one
was ever charged with the
murders that occurred in
February 1880, when an
angry mob stormed the fam-
ily home, killed those inside,
and then burned it down to
the ground.
The Last Donnelly Standing,
conceived and created by
Garratt, Paul Thompson and
Beth Kates, takes the audience
on an adventure with Robert
Donnelly, who was a success-
ful business man who stayed
in Lucan after the murders
while the rest of his family

moved away.
Despite the subject matter,
the show isn't all doom and
gloom. Co -writers Thomp-
son and Garrett included
just enough humour to keep
the audience laughing.
The question of whether
Garratt, Blyth Festival's artis-
tic director, could shake his
real-life charisma discredits
his vast experience and tal-
ent as an actor.
Not only does Garratt

embody Donnelly in his best
and worst moments through

Can one person, one actor

embedded in local history,
so nuanced that over 135
years later we're still unsure
of what really happened?
The answer is yes.
