Hometown Heroes charity hockey game raises over $40,000 for local organizations Laura Broadley Postmedia Network Despite the mid -summer heat, the Canadian hockey spirit was out in full force at the Maitland Recreation Centre on July 21. The third annual Hometown Heroes "Raise A Little Health" charity hockey game raised $40,000. Those funds will be dis- tributed between the Goderich- Huron YMCA Strong Kids cam- paign, Gateway Centre of Excellence in Rural Health and the Alexandra Marine and Gen- eral Hospital Foundation. MP for Huron Bruce, Ben Lobb, spearheaded the initiative three years ago as a way to raise funds for local organizations. The event has raised about $130,000 over the three years, something Lobb said is remarkable for a community like Goderich and the surrounding areas. "It's a great community initia- tive," Lobb said. Thanks to a promise made by Lobb, spectators were given the opportunity to see some big names in the world of professional hockey grace the ice of the MRC. Returning for the third year in a row were crowd favourites and team captains, Ryan O'Reilly and Boyd Devereaux. "This is home," Ryan O'Reilly said. "It's a great community." Big names in the hockey world battled it out on the MRC ice on July 21 for the third annual charity hockey game. O'Reilly said he likes being able to come back and help out a community he lived in when he was younger. He said he was fortunate to grow up in Huron County where there is a big focus on hockey. "So to come back and contrib- ute...to see these kids out here and affect that. Hopefully one of these days one of those kids will be playing in the NHL too," O'Reilly said. Former NHLer Dave McLlwain, Frank Corrado of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Jared McCann of the Florida Panthers, and Keaton Mid- dleton (fourth round 2016 NHL entry draft pick for the Maple Leafs) also joined the roster. "There's likely thousands of games played combined, of all the guys out here," Lobb said. "We've had more pros everyyear and less guys like me playing because we really want to entertain the fans with the high-level hockey:' This year there was also star power behind the bench with former Toronto Blue Jay right fielder and two time recipient of the Gold Glove award, Jesse Bar- field, guiding Team Devereaux. Barfield helped coach Lobb's baseball camp last year, but wasn't able to make out to the diamonds this year so he decided to help out at the rink. "It didn't work out for him to do our baseball camp this year, but we wanted to do something. He loves the area, and it was great to have him behind the bench," Lobb said. Team Devereaux came out on top of Team O'Reilly before shoot-outs with a score of 6-4. The final score was a tie at 9-9.
