Goderich becomes hot spot for Pokemon Go
Laura Broadley
Postmedia Network
There are creatures loose
in Goderich that has
prompted people from
across the region to hop in
their cars and take trip to
Canada's prettiest town.
Pokemon Go players, or
trainers as they're called in
the game, have been com-
ing to Goderich to catch
Pokemon (or Pocket Mon-
sters in English) ever since
the game was officially
released in Canada on July
18.
Pokemon, a Japanese -cre-
ated franchise, was a mid-
90s sensation that included
multiple animated TV
shows, manga book series,
video games and the ever -
popular playground card
game.
The Pokemon Go smart
phone app was released in
the US and the UK in early
July before it became availa-
ble in Canada last week - a
huge comeback for the
20 -year-old franchise.
The goal of Pokemon Go is
to capture all the Pokemon,
which are creatures with dif-
ferent names and character-
istics; some are more rare
and more elusive than
others.
The game uses GPS maps
to take players around in a
virtual reality. When players
attain level five they choose
to become part of a team.
There are Pokemon gyms
where you either battle or
train your Pokemon depend-
ing on what team the gym is
assigned.
Gyms are usually located
at local points of interest, like
St. Christopher's Beach in
Goderich.
Players collect items from
PokeStops that will help
them on their quest to catch
all the Pokemon.
Terilyn Nutt, 22, has been
a Pokemon fan since she
was little. The love of the
unique creatures has never
gone away completely, and
so when she heard Poke -
mon Go was released in the
US she got on board right
away.
Nutt encouraged her
friend, Courtney Begg, 24, to
join, and now Begg is
hooked too.
The app developers make
money by selling PokeCoins
for real-world money. These
coins help users find and
evolve their Pokemon.
"I've spent $50, but don't
tell my mom," Nutt said as
she glanced over her shoul-
der towards her mom, Kath-
leen, who also had her eyes
trained on the screen of her
smart phone.
The craze has taken ahold
of the entire Nutt family; Ter-
ilyn's mom Kathleen, sister
Crystal and dad Kevin are all
avid Pokemon players.
The Nutts and Begg, who
are all from Stratford, were
on vacation last week in Port
Albert, and came to Goder-
ich because the gyms here
are easy to take over, Nutt
explained.
There are carpools of peo-
ple from Stratford that make
the trip to Goderich regu-
larly to take advantage of the
less -protected gyms, Nutt
said.
Normally, Kathleen said
she wouldn't want her family
so focused on their phones,
especially during the sum-
mer months when the
weather is warmer, but
because the game

moving and interact with
one another, she said she's
okay with it.
Kathleen initially resisted
downloading the game, but
she saw that it would

took the so-called plunge.
"I got addicted," she
admitted with a laugh.
