Under the Assisted Human
Reproduction Act, (2004) she
may be reimbursed for
expenses incurred during prep-
aration for transfer of embryos,
while pregnant, and for a deter-
mined amount of time after
birth. Under section six of the
Act it is illegal to "pay or offer to
pay or advertise that someone
will pay a woman to be a surro-
gate mother. You may not
accept consideration (anything
given or promised in exchange
for something, not just money)
for arranging for the services of
a surrogate mother, offer to
make such an arrangement for
consideration or advertise the
arranging of such services. You
also can't advise or persuade a
women to become a surrogate
mother or do any medial proce-
dure to help a woman become
a surrogate mother knowing or
having reason to believe that
woman is under 21 years of
age'
The total costs of surrogacy
in Canada varies between
each experience, explains
Peeters. As a guide they rec-
ommend budgeting any-
where from $48,500 -$73,500.
CSC can assist you in forming
accurate quotations to suit
your individual circum-
stances!' There are agency
fees, surrogacy reimburse-
ments, insurances, medical
screening, and IVF depending
on the circumstances.
"Our commitment is not just
for a fewweeks, we are here for
you for at least a year if not
longer, and we want to be able
to provide you, not only as an
intended parent the adequate
support but also provide a
friendly, confidential and sup-
portive environment for your
surrogate and egg donor. We
work a little differently than
others in Canada CSC does not
charge fees for consulting we
haven't yet undertaken,"
Peeters explains.
"We are not allowed to
"match' surrogates with
intended parents its against the
law, We do however provide a
safe framework in which we
vigorously screen both surro-
gates and intended parents
with the intention of building a
profile in which empowers you
to find your surrogate or egg
donor armed with all the infor-
mation and support that you
need. For surrogates and egg
donors we do the same for
Intended Parents so you can
search for a detailed profile of
characteristics you want in your
surrogacy joumey;" says Peeters
saying the laws in Canada need
to move forward and others in
government positions agree.

Peeters, from the Canadian
Surrogacy Community, and I
are working together on a
plan to advocate on behalf of
surrogates and provide the
Government of Canada infor-
mation and support in order
to help them review and
hopefully amend the sections
of the Assisted Human Repro-
duction Act that criminalize
surrogacy. I think we have a
forward thinking, socially
conscious Liberal government
right now who are open to re-
visiting this conversation, and
we want to be a part ofit:'
