Students help clean the Hullett Marsh for Earth Day

On April 19, students
from grades 4-6 from Hul-
lett Central Public School
took action in commemo-
rating Earth Day by help-
ing to pick up litter at the
Hullett Marsh.
Manager Scott Austin
went to the school the week
before and gave a power -
point presentation about
what they are doing at the
marsh and explained how
the day would work. Ideal
Supply is a corporate spon-
sor of the marsh, and they
donated all the gloves and
garbage bags for the day.
"One goal of this was to
educate the kids about the
marsh," said Austin.
The Hullett Marsh is a
non-profit which manages
the public land. It is a
5420 acre, man-made
marsh which was created
in the 70s and took around
10 years to complete. The
marsh heavily relies on
the many residents who
volunteer at the location.
"80-90 percent of our
wetlands have been
drained for agriculture in
Southern Ontario," said
Austin. "Wetlands are
important for species, fil-
tration of water, and more."
Scott says he is always
writing funding applica-
tions to improve the marsh.
He has recently orches-
trated a number of positive
changes at the marsh
including redoing the trails.
There are no fees to use the
grounds for hiking and
other activities.
